Don’t get it

Reading articles detailing coaches using the n-word when trying to stop players from using it, I don’t understand how this is considered wrong or racist? Is just saying the word ( no matter the context) considered racist and deserving of severe punishment (loss of job, public apology, counseling, etc.)?

I was a pretty big fan of rap music. I’m sure at some point I “sang along” with some of it.
Hope there is no video of that! Or even a photo of me holding one of the album covers.

I’d be in BIG trouble now.
