Tommy Bowden - destined to fail at the highest level

Nov 1, 2016, 4:27 PM

I would argue that Tommy Bowden is probably a better X's and O's coach than Dabo (I could be wrong about this, but experience and pedigree may suggest that he is). HOWEVER, coaching skills alone can only take you so far. The reason Dabo's results at Clemson are far superior to Tommy's is because of Dabo's business/CEO skills and (moreso) because of his personality.

When it comes to five-star prospects, Tommy's personality couldn't attract a fly to a pile of dog poop. Sure he could coach mediocre talent to an above average (i.e. 8-4) record, but he would have NEVER been able to land the guys Dabo landed simply because of that bland, impersonal, and (recently recognized) bitter disposition. Thus Tommy was destined to fail at this level of college football. And he would have failed the exact same way at any Power 5 school.

Dabo is a winner because (among other things) he knows how to put life into perspective. His warm, inviting demeanor, which has nothing to do with football, attracts the best of everything...friends, colleagues, coaches and players. It's easy for him because his humanity comes so naturally.

Dabo would be just as successful if he coached basketball, baseball, rowing, or tiddly winks. Tommy Bowden? Not so much.

You give him too much credit, imo.

I don't know that he has had a coaching job offer. I suggest that did any AD believe that he can coach his way out of a paper bag he would have taken a job after his Clemson cash flow ended.

He is now relegated to talking on TV because he once had associations with D1 football programs.

And look at TB's brothers, too - haven't they all.......

failed as coaches too? They all seemed to think they could step in and be just like their father but weren't willing to do what it took to achieve his success.

Terry did quite well at Auburn, until rules got in the way.***

This is the real reason he's so bitter

Nov 1, 2016, 4:42 PM [ in reply to You give him too much credit, imo. ]

He was ready to leave Clemson and more than happy to claim the buyout money.

He didn't expect Dabo to be light year's more successful than he could ever hope to be and he was sure someone else would beg him to coach their team by the time the money ran out.

He was wrong on both counts. It will probably get worse before it gets better.

I don't know how much this figures into Dabo's success

Nov 1, 2016, 4:47 PM

but it surely can't hurt .Beyond all 3 playing at Alabama Frank Howard , Danny Ford and Dabo all share the same trait in that they make you feel like they have always been at Clemson.Danny and Dabo might have Bama gear stuffed away in a room at home but if they do they aren't letting on and it's like they have always lived here and nowhere else.

Clemson has had pretty good success promoting assistant coaches that were Alabama grads: Howard, Pell, Ford and Swinney!!

one thing we can all agree on is that nobody can chin quiver

Dog Bowden all you like. However, just think where Clemson

Nov 1, 2016, 5:12 PM

would be if Tommy did not do the following: (1) Hire a certain Birmingham real estate developer to be his WR coach, (2) raised the awareness that our facilities had fallen behind and that we needed to spend some money to get better, (3) as he was being fired, recommended that the Birmingham real estate developer mentioned above be our interim head coach. Tommy played a role in the success Clemson is currently having. We can all argue how big a role, but he certainly played a role.

Wasn't trying to dog him. Everything you said is correct. I was just pointing out that his personality would have never allowed him to be successful, no matter how long he stayed.

We agree completely on that******
