Native Americans don't give a crap, one way or another. It was white liberals' sensitivities that were offended.

Anyhow, I always thought the name change was occasioned by gender considerations and they found "Orangepersons " a bit unwieldy.

The change was made due to the equal number of women sports teams at the school. Most everyone in CNY still call them the Orangemen. Most women locally wish we were still the Orangemen and Orangewomen. How hard would that be?

"Orangemen" was derived from the nickname for the Irish Protestants, followers of William of Orange, who settled the upper Hudson Valley in the early 1700's. The change was made to appease the number of Irish Catholics in New York who resented the state supported homage to their ancestral oppressors.
