AZ GOP censure three Pubs.

Jan 24, 2021, 11:04 AM

It’s a cliche to say “do you ever get tired of being wrong?” But...yes. Yes I do.

I thought for sure that when push came to shove, Trump would step down...if not in a dignified way...at least in an appropriate way. That did not happen.

I also have disagreed with @quozzel about the idea that “Trump-ism” will effect the GOP for a long time. And yet...what the heck is this about? What is the value of this move? For goodness sake, is Flake even in elected office anymore?

I realize it’s just a symbolic move but sheesh, why?

Trump’s activists have taken over many state parties

Jan 24, 2021, 11:46 AM

Not just in AZ. It’s going to eventually rupture the party.

Keep in mind, this basically is the latest mutation of the tea party movement. You can trace the seeds of this activism back to Rick Santelli’s CNBC rant.

It is the opposite of Real Politik. It is Total Victory, Total Opposition politics. Absolutely no compromise under any circumstances. This makes organizing consensus nearly impossible at the state level.

Could have sworn you just described the democratic party

Seriously.

No doubt party leadership on Dems side is dysfunctional

Jan 24, 2021, 7:35 PM

but it is because they are a party of special interests whose activists are widely diffused and whose agenda creates chaos under the party tent. Each state has varying degrees of this dysfunction and chaos. Virginia Dems are vastly different than California Dems.

There is no equivalent dynamic to Trump on the Dem side. Four years ago, they maneuvered Hillary into position, but then you had a lot of Bernie supporters who tried to mix things up.

In 2020, the election was solely about defeating Trump. They managed to unify all those competing interests to achieve that one goal across the country. They forced Bernie and his democratic socialist agenda politics to the back seat. Same thing with AOC. During the campaign, she was basically as quiet as ever.

It's not the same thing at all with Trumpism. He and Newt Gingrich have a lot in common in that they've made the party so rigid in it's partisan dogma and you have to decide whether you are either with them or against them. There's no in between.

Prof,

I think a lot of the national Repubs are playing things close to the vest - to see which way the wind blows.

But I think a lot of state Repubs have drunk the Kool-Aid and are committed to the Total Victory approach. The first serious fissures in the party will happen at the state level.

Which naturally results in stories like this:

None of which has led to censure by the AZ GOP.

But showing respect for the new President, or accepting the election results, apparently has?

We're a two-party system but there really are three very competing sides. You've got AOC and Bernie and their Baby Bolsheviks on one side, the Trumpistas on the far right acting more and more like Mussolini's browncoats all the time - and in the middle, increasingly disconnected from, and I suspect, aggravated by, both sides are the most of us - the moderate center.

We're trying to jam three different viewpoints into just two increasingly polarized parties and it's gotten everybody all confused, especially since the dumpster fire that is "conservative media" - God I hate that term, it's actually the anti-media - does its level best each and every day to convince their viewership that anybody to the left of Adolf Hitler is a Socialist, and is utterly unfettered by glaring fact-check fails to boot. The mainstream media at least has to worry about passing fact checks, but their ever-growing hostility to, sorry, working-class white people and especially to evangelicals has alienated them, and contributed to the notion that anything outside of cities are flyover zones for Democratic politicos and should be treated as enemy territory. And here we are today.

I'm personally coming to the idea the media - or at least, the consumption of media - is 99% of the problem. How we're getting our information is just...crazy, right now. We're literally re-creating the Tower of Babble, everybody speaking their own languages, and we badly need to start communicating successfully again. We need to go back to the equal-time rules we started getting away from in the late 80's, and getting back to making sure the best representation of each viewpoint gets heard, and we need to fine the crap out of conspiracy-theory misinformation that is dangerous to the public interest, like baseless rumors about vaccinations that we badly need to beat COVID and put our economy right-side up again. We need to put warning labels about bias levels - right, center-right, center, center-left, left - on every broadcast over a certain number of views, and we need to clearly label what is actual news and what is actual infotainment being bloviated at us by talking heads. And oh, yeah, we need to make sure really crazy crap isn't getting amplified and metastasizing on social media, and we really need to take a look at killing those personal social-media algorithms that tend to surround us with our own personal self-sealing confirmation bubbles that prevent us from ever even seeing stuff that doesn't conform to our own reality picture.

You wanna literally make a man crazy? Show him only what he wants to see. Then send him out into the world and see what happens. It isn't going to go well...and it isn't.

That's what we're doing to ourselves and each other right now, and we've gotta knock it off. "Trumpism" is just one glaring symptom of that.

Just my .02 worth.
