Comparing two ND games

Dec 21, 2020, 4:36 PM

Just a few thoughts...
Clemson scored 33 points in the first game regulation, 34 in regulation this time.
ND scored 33 points in regulation the first game, 10 this time!

Clemson offense stats first game, 34 yds rushing, 1.0 average, 425 yds passing, 10 yds average, 26% third down, 2 sacks.
ND first game, 209 yds rush, 5.1 avg, 302 pass, 7.9 avg, 52% third down, 2 sacks.

Clemson Offense second game, 219 rush, 8.1 avg, 316 pass, 8.3 avg, 57% third down, 2 sacks.
ND Second game, 44 rush, 1.5 avg, 180 pass, 7.8 avg, 25% third down, 6 sacks!

So, we all know that DJ played great in the first game, but that the down field passing was not TL like. This is similar to the Alabama game with Bryant! This allowed the ND defense to stack the box. But, from the points scored, this really was not why we lost the game (obviously).

With Davis and the others out, we could not stop their runs. With Davis, the DL got two more tackles, and increased the sacks from 2 to 6 (yes, the increase was from the LBs, but they were through the DL)!! And with the pressure dialed up, Book was hurried a lot more...

For what it is worth, the Tigers had 59 total tackles in the first game, 73 in the second! Anybody that says the loss of starters on our defense in the first game were not a significant factor, knows very little about football!

I think it was more of a change in strategy on the d, they contained Book and made him pass from the pocket (which he isn’t good at)

Agree...but do not know if they could have pulled that off without the starters returning!

Also, their RB Williams had 140 yds, 3 tds, the first game, 50 yds, 0 tds, this one....that strategy to contain the quarterback this time would have been negated if Williams averaged over 6 yards a carry this time.

Turnover/ fumble for touchdown

and the early 75 yard run for TD put us in a hole on the road with inexperience. Take those two plays away and we win in regulation.

Containing Book was the big one. And our skilled guys not turning over the football was another one.
