Clemson should tie W.V. this weekend when Kansas St throttles the Mountaineers. W.V. then has to play #25 Oregon St so the chances are good that the Tigers take over the #14 spot with wins over Wake Forest and Usuck.

If everything plays out as it should, Clemson will be going into Wiily B looking to move up to 14th on the all-time list with a win over the coots. Looking forward to that.

Didn't VT play 1-AA football for a long time?

If my memory serves correct when Frank Beamer became the Head Coach they were a terrible program that had never won anything. Looks like a lot of their wins came 1-AA schools.

VaTech wasn't bad under Bill Dooley before Beamer.

No, VT never played in D1-AA.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University was, like us, once a member of the Southern Conference, which as we know spawned both the SEC & ACC. They remained in the Southern for a few years after the ACC spun off & then went Independent. In fact, it was the departure of VT, along with West Virginia & East Carolina, that marked the final curtain for the Southern as a big-time football conference. More often than not they fielded winning teams, but they always played in relative obscurity, especially before the days of cable teevee & media saturation. We played them off-&-on back then, & usually beat them. They had a few good teams when Bill Dooley was their HC. But it wasn't until Frank Beamer built them into a powerhouse & they joined the Big East that they ever had any kind of national profile. But they've always been more or less committed to big-time football, always met the minimum requirements for 1-A status in stadium size, revenue, etc.

Virginia Tech was a doormat for decades. Before the Beamer era they ended their season ranked only twice in their history. We didn't play them a lot in the pre-Beamer days, but when we did, we almost always beat them. IIRC they were a frequent homecoming opponent.

That is not exactly true.

Virginia Tech was Clemson without a conference, with the legacy coach happening much later in the history (like a result of the conference issues). Basically Beamer is their Howard. They also missed out on their 1981 moment in 1999. Still.... Imagine if Tobacco road and the coots decided to shut out Clemson from their geographic competition. That is basically what happened.

Basically, VT applied to be in the ACC in '65, '77, and I think it was likely even through into the 90s.... but the ACC constantly shut the door - normally UVA and UNC wanting to keep VT out. Basically, it wasn't until the Governors intervention that VaTech was considered. Often academics were cited but VT was generally on par (slightly behind) with Clemson and better than NC State, FSU, etc so it was a false argument. It wasn't that VaTech could not compete, but rather politics keeping the out... and politics basically had to force them in.

Interestingly enough, if the ACC did not accept VT, I could have seen VT going over to the SEC in 2012. In addition, I am 100% sure than Virginia would remove itself from the ACC because that is was the Governor was posturing (and the president serves at the behest of the Governor). Imagine if the B10 got both UVA, Maryland, and maybe VaTech.

Still, when the ACC poached former Metro conference teams, it has been successful (GT, FSU, VaTech) and only Loserville being the exception.

We can certainly solidify our spot in the top 14 over the next 5 seasons, will be incredibly difficult to move up much past there however.
