Clem + Son = Clemson.....never understood the issue

Dec 4, 2015, 12:23 PM

Other than, you know, the average person is an unmitigated idiot.

True, regardless of whether people pronounce the word properly, there is no "i", "p", or "z" in the spelling. I wonder if anyone has thought of changing the "k", "l", "m", or "n" sounds.

Can't find it on the WYFF site, but linked elsewhere. I asked the same question.

Clem"p"son

Dec 4, 2015, 12:37 PM

...that is all

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The key is the hard "m"

Dec 4, 2015, 12:42 PM

A quicker, harder "m" sound adds a little more emphasis, producing the illusionary "p" that some people interpret. If the m is said slower, with effort, or drug out any at all, then the prohibitive and ghastly "z" sound emerges. Walt Deptoolah is unable to execute this simple truth, like many of his pronunciations, though I suspect his enunciation of "New-un" is purposeful and an effort to imitate a certain colored dialect.

This is why "Huked on Fonics" hasn't and won't ever work. When you are in the stands shouting "C L E M S O N", you Do Not add a Z where the S is, and you Do Not add a P. Dabo can pronounce his name however he wants...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo was EXACTLY right...

Dec 4, 2015, 12:58 PM

...there's very minor hint of a "P" in there so I'm disappointed that the reporter got it wrong. Certainly CLEM-SON is very acceptable but local colloquial-dialect is what Dabo said.

I agree

Dec 4, 2015, 3:12 PM

so it must be right! ;)

Once she said the two syllables together it sounded perfect

Dec 2, 2013, 8:57 PM [ in reply to Dabo was EXACTLY right... ]

It's just the way the mouth works transitioning from the "M" to "S". We've covered this before. ;)

Say "Simson" and see if you notice the clipped sound in there as well. No big mystery. I suppose if you had a cleft lip it would sound different though.

I'd modify that slightly. Your heading was right, Dabo was right. Clem-son is correct. Adding a "p" is perfectly acceptable. Much like most of us say Sumter with a "p".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo got it. If you don't agree, then you are obviously
