Qweeshon for the lungers

Apr 28, 2014, 1:12 PM

I remember seeing a couple months ago a thread about composting. I'm gonna be closing on my first house next month and I'm thinking bout doing a small garden in my back yard next year, so I figured I'd start doing some composting now to have some good soil built up when I decide to use it.

For the composters in here, what should I be looking for as far as price range (don't wanna get a crappy cheap one, but don't need a super pricey high end one), and do places like Ace/Lowe's/Home Depot have them?

Also I seem to remember people saying you shouldn't put certain stuff in there like egg shells and what not.

Any advice is appreciated

$10,000-$15,000 and put it ALL on credit (before closing). And if you chop it up properly, you can compost anything, including humans. Also, no need for functioning toilets, just #### in your nice composter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lakebum is correct. No need for a "composter"

Apr 28, 2014, 1:32 PM [ in reply to I don't think buying a composter is required to have a ]

All you really need is an area and you can go at it right away.

Go to Lowes and look in the garden section. Get you 4 green steaks about 3ft high each, and some fence to match. It's not really fence, more like chicken wire type stuff. All green, won't look bad.

Then throw stuff in there. Pretty much any food scraps except meat. Coffee grinds are good too. Also leaves, dirt, weeds, grass clippings...just not sticks.

Works good for a place to toss food scraps and general stuff around the yard that you want to remove but can recycle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thanks for the helpful response, luvdemtgrs.

Apr 28, 2014, 1:35 PM

Is that fence sufficient to keep critters out?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whatever you do, always give 100%.....unless it's donating blood

Yeah, don't think you need to worry about critters

Apr 28, 2014, 1:44 PM

I've never had any issues...and have lived in suburban areas.

Really all you need is 3 sides of it to be "fenced in" and you can enter/exit from the open side.

Mine is about 16x16 and I put more leaves, dirt, etc than food waste. If food waste is mainly what you are composting it won't need to be any bigger than a few feet square.

Also, by fence (look at Lowes you'll see what I mean) it's really just like green plastic coated wire. It kind of just wraps around and hooks into the posts, you can then secure it more with zip ties.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This stuff

Apr 28, 2014, 1:49 PM

And the u channel fence posts mentioned.

I think you can get a smaller roll than this though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

eggshells (washed) are good, coffee FILTERS too

Apr 28, 2014, 1:59 PM [ in reply to Thanks for the helpful response, luvdemtgrs. ]

NO fats (meat, butter, oil, human remains, etc...)

i've found that onions & bread don't do well either. And another Protip: Dont toss veggie/fruit scraps in there that may have seeds that'd be prone to sprouting in there. Like Pumpkins. Like MF'n pumpkins from hades

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those feels...I was overtaken by pumpkins last year...

Apr 28, 2014, 2:12 PM [ in reply to eggshells (washed) are good, coffee FILTERS too ]

I guess the previous owners carved about 40 pumpkins in this particular area, because I had what felt like hundreds. Although, they are great fun to destroy when drunk. I'd beat them with shovels, an ax, baseball bat, shot one, destroyed one with my bare hands...They're quite the stress reliever.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

squash bugs got all but 3 of mine

Apr 28, 2014, 2:14 PM

then I left them outside too long and they basically turned into putrid pumpkin-like water balloons.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You missed a golden opportunity...

Apr 28, 2014, 2:21 PM

Seriously, if you get any more this year, let me know...We can have a session. I'm hoping I get some more too, I really want to get enough so I can stack them up and drive through them.
