Can you name any College Back-up QBs who made it in the NFL?

Oct 11, 2018, 1:13 PM

I’m sure there are more but the only one who comes to mind BIG TIME is:

Kurt Warner? Or maybe he DID start for lowly FCS Northern Iowa his Senior year.

Matt Casell backed up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC

Oct 11, 2018, 1:18 PM

He only attempted 33 passes in his four years in college but still got drafted and has had a nice NFL career.

He's definitely the most notable...

Cassell was an All-City high school QB in Los Angeles but never started a game in college.

As you pointed out, he was the backup to both Carson Palmer and Matt Leinert.

Nonetheless, he was still drafted by the Patriots.

Until Brady was injured during the 2008 season, Cassell had never started a game in his NFL career.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Guy only threw 249 passes in his college career and had a TD/INT ratio of 14/9.

Passed for over 29,000 yards in the NFL.

I think he had the biggest comeback in college too when MD beat Miami.
His record setting NFL comeback was at Buffalo I think,

That was the one I was going to say. I'd say that is as good an answer to the question as any.

Tom Brady started like 2 seasons at Michigan.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sort of. They always wanted Drew Henson to take over

Oct 11, 2018, 3:00 PM

because he was an all-world athlete and huge recruit. IIRC he got several starts ahead of Brady and split some snaps but he was terrible his first two years and Brady always ended up taking over and bailing them out.

But yeah Brady was basically the starter in 98 and 99 after Griese graduated in 97.

I was a bit of a Michigan fan when I was a kid because I thought their jerseys and helmets were awesome.

Yeah that would've been my first response

Without looking it up - I think he did start some his senior year when the other guy went down (name escapes me but he played for The Dolphins) but he was a career backup

Brady played in 12 games his junior year and 11 his senior year.

Yes, several. Brady being the most famous of all. Just look to Florida and you will find more than you can shake a stick at. What is the point of this question?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Except Brady was not a backup

Although he alternated, Matt Robinson played behind Ray Goff

Oct 11, 2018, 6:39 PM

At UGA, and then played for the ny jets. Goff was the runner and Robinson was the passer.

Mark Richt did the same thing with DJ Shockley.

As a SO, Shock played the first series of the second quarter while David Greene played the rest. Shockley turned the ball over frequently until he got hurt. Then the Dawg offense really took off with Greene as the regular QB.

Shockley played much better when he became the outright starter later in his college career.

Not sure Shockley ever got into more than one NFL training camp, though.
