Can ACC renegotiate tv contract if fan attendance is limited

Jul 30, 2020, 8:20 AM

Logically if fan attendance is limited, then you are going to have more eyeballs watching on tv. More viewers usually means better money for ad buys due to reaching a larger audience. Yes under a 10 +1, ACC teams will be losing 1 game from typical 12 game schedule, but I think that would be countered with bringing ND to the table. Is Ad revenue already factored in to the contract as a floating value based on ratings or would that be an issue that could be renegotiated while fan restrictions are in place?

I have been wondering the same thing.

With most teams playing 3 non-conference home games per season, ESPN is actually getting far less games (70 instead of 98). The games are higher quality than home games vs smaller schools. NBC will also lose 1 game due to ND only playing 5+1 at home. I'm sure this was the contrary argument by the TV providers.

If they don’t let anyone in the stands that would be a potential 80k additional TV views for a Clemson game. The TV viewership for a typical Clemson game is over 2 million, so an extra 80k is pretty meaningless.
