From Cold War, Nuclear Threats, etc....

Mar 27, 2014, 7:43 AM

to a "regional power?"

Is this dude off his meds?

Russia still has the largest stockpile of nuclear material in

Mar 27, 2014, 7:51 AM

the world, according to the reporter that I just watched on TV. That alone puts the lie to the 'regional power' statement.

It was also interesting to hear Obama have to explain exactly, precisely, to the letter, about how our invasion of Iraq was not a land or resource grab. Period.

Beautiful.

I just wonder what this crew will come up with next???

I mean, there are dozens of writers for him.... right? So, peer checks, admin review, and the prez himself, went through some moment of agreement - like "yeah, this sounds great. I think I'll use this!"

Maybe they all need meds.

Obama will not admit fault or a general sense of that he

made a mistake. He is playing political games with a foe that has enough ICB's to hit each American City.

Didn't Reagan win the Cold War 25 years ago?

Mar 27, 2014, 9:03 AM

Didn't the dissolution of the Soviet Union signal their loss of status as a superpower, rendering them merely a regional power?

Who's off their meds here?

There is a clip of Obama ridiculing Romney on that

Mar 27, 2014, 9:33 AM [ in reply to Didn't Reagan win the Cold War 25 years ago? ]

topic making the rounds these days on the web. Obama said basically, "Hey, Mitt, the 80's called, and they want their foreign policy back."

I've seen conjecture that Putin might be the world's first trillionaire. That level of kleptocracy is a little hard to fathom, and the fact that there is no one in his own government to oppose him, or at least keep him in check, makes these days possibly scarier than when Brezhnev and the rest of the bears were running things.

That's a reasonable assessment, but

Mar 27, 2014, 9:50 AM

I don't think that changes the fact that Russia is a regional power. As far as I know they're not using their nuclear arsenal to advance their agenda and they simply don't have the reach they had during the Cold War. In terms of scope, this Ukraine business pales in comparison to, say, the Soviet Union invading Afghanistan in the '80s.

What Putin's doing now doesn't, in my opinion, constitute a threat against America. Russia clearly isn't our comrade, but I'm pretty sure we're not on the cusp of global thermonuclear war.

You are forgetting their trade ties with Western nations

Mar 27, 2014, 10:05 AM

like Venezuela and Brazil. among others. They are hardly regional.

China has trade ties with Western nations, too.

Mar 27, 2014, 11:04 AM [ in reply to You are forgetting their trade ties with Western nations ]

Their GDP is four times the size of Russia's and they have nuclear weapons.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which sovereign nation have they taken by force?

Mar 27, 2014, 11:36 AM

I'll hang up now.

2009_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Crimea wasn't a sovereign nation.

A US admiral called them a regional power two days ago.

Mar 27, 2014, 12:05 PM

"I think they'll have in the next decade or so a fairly well modernized force of probably 60 to 70 submarines which is a lot of submarines for a regional power."

of them in a military context. They don't have the capacity of Russia in that regard.
