AC question?

Aug 9, 2019, 3:48 PM

2 stage vs. 1 stage? Will the 2 stage save significant money? We set our thermostat to 78-80 in the summer and 65-67 in the winter. Seems like we'd save money on electricity, but not really finding much info on my initial google searches.

78-80? Why even have AC?

Aug 9, 2019, 3:50 PM

Windows and an attic fan will get you that.

78-80 is comfortable.

Especially with ceiling fans.

Lak Trick bill runs $300/mo. We have a separate AC for upstairs and down. Then with heat we have gas down and electric heat pump upstairs.

78 IS comfortable with the correct setup. IF your system has too much tonnage its will keep your house at 78 BUT it will not run enough to take humidity out of the air. 78 with low humidity and 78 with high humidity are two completely different things. 78 IS cool if it has low humidity. A properly sized system will deliver both comfort and cooling.

I need a programmable thermostat. I want it 72 to sleep

Aug 9, 2019, 4:40 PM

but circa 4 am it can start to creep back up no problem. I also want one that I don't have to switch from hot to cold.

My 23 year old unit would laugh at me if I tried to do that with my thermostat.

On 76, it runs from the time I wake up until the time I take the trash out after work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you sure you don't have a duct

Aug 9, 2019, 4:44 PM

problem? I had a duct problem that lead to my unit not being able to keep up at 76 this June.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brand, spanking new ducts. Less than a year old.

Aug 9, 2019, 9:32 PM

I had a re-inspection done by an HVAC company just to make sure the job was done right.

A new energy efficient AC would probably pay

Aug 9, 2019, 9:54 PM

For itself in 3 years in energy cost avoidance. I just replaced my 22 yr old unit and my bill was down $140 from last month running the old AC
