Since Duke University is named after

David Ernest Duke, a neo Nazi white supremacist and former grand wizard of the klan, when will Duke University change their name?
I know Jay Bilas has been outspoken about Dabo and Clemson, but it seems awfully convenient that he has been silent about this Duke controversy.

Uh, it's named by James B. Duke, not David Duke.
James Buchanan Duke was the original founder of the American Tobacco Company in Durham. He established the Duke Endowment, a major portion of which went to then-named Trinity College. Once Trinity got that funding, they changed the name to Duke University and moved to Durham from Trinity, NC.
The university itself was James' idea and named for his father Washington Duke. There's a Washington Duke Inn on Duke's campus nearby the athletic area.
Duke was actually my first choice school and I didn't get in because I screwed around my senior year of HS. Clemson was my second choice and I ended up attending from 2011-2016. But I used to live about 45 mins from Duke's campus and visited regularly before my fam moved to Charlotte and I ended up at Clemson.

djb-ws is correct. It was named for Washington Duke, a tobacco farmer who left his farm to fight in the Civil War. After the war, he was penniless and went back to his farm, where he and his son James Duke, rebuilt it. I doubt that he would have had the money to buy any slaves. His later started W Duke and Sons tobacco company. Their claim to fame was having the first cigarette making machine. So if you want to bad mouth them, there is that!James Duke later gave a lot of money in his father's name to what was then Trinity College and it was remaned Duke.

Wiki states he owned a slave before the war, but yes, after the war he was broke, and he certainly wasn't the grand wizard of the KKK.
