Anyone sold a car privately lately?....

Aug 24, 2020, 8:22 AM

how did you sell it...use any web sites like Autotrader, etc...?

It's been a few yrs since I sold a car private party and wanted to see if there were any new tricks?

Also...if anyone is interested in buying a used 2007 Sienna XLE, 129k miles, good shape...

Have to factor in the cost of your time when

Aug 24, 2020, 8:44 AM

making this decision because from what I've heard you are going to get quite a few people wasting your time coming to see it.

I ended up getting a surprisingly good offer from Carmax and used that as the baseline when negotiating with the dealer, ended up selling to the dealer.

Yeah, the offers from Carmax and carvana are...

Aug 24, 2020, 8:48 AM

~$2000 less than what KBB and Edmunds are showing for private sale.

I'm not desperate to sell it, so I can wait/put in a little effort.

Carvana's offer for my trade in was comically bad***

Tricks for selling... no

Aug 24, 2020, 8:49 AM

but if you're buying, try using fake money.

I bought a boat from this dude about a year ago and passed off some fake hundys on him. That ignorant sister-effer probably never figured it out.

Aug 24, 2020, 9:04 AM

whatever website you use, cuts down on stoopid questions. I also include:

"I will not respond to texts or emails. If you see this ad, the car is still available. I will sell to the first person that shows up with an official bank check"

daydreamers text & email, cutting them out cuts out a lot of BS. And if you speak to them, it's easier to gauge how likely they are to murder you. Park the car somewhere in a busy public place, convenient and close for you, where it can be seen by more people and avoids people coming to your house.

Logically, I agree with you. Based on experience,

I've found the opposite to be true.

I wrote a novel on one car with entire history and set a fair price. Nary a call.

For fun, next car, I just put year, make, model, mileage and "Excellent condition". The responses were insane.

It's like the less you say on Craigslist the better.

1 of only 266 examples (a nod to the staggering horsepower figure). No tire kickers or joyriders!

Yup. Autotrader and Craigslist is where I listed. Autotrader got me the sell. Craigslist was ok, but lots of spam, which is annoying.

Cars? No, but I have sold on Craigslist some

pigs as well as some guineas. I ripped the guy off on the pigs and he was dumb enough that he actually came back a year later and bought some guineas. What a sucker.

Hey everybody, Tickle_it is a meth head motorcycle mechanic that is shacked up with a real estate agent / hobby farmer in Gaston that has a yard full of toilets and bath tubs that are used as planters.

I bet you feel stupid now, Tickle_it, or should I say, Jody!

Listed a BMW 335 on FB Marketplace and parked it at my friend's office so it could be seen. I had numerous people trying to get me to do owner financing. I politely informed them that would offer neither party any type of protection. Ended up selling to someone who saw the car parked at friend's office.

Listed my daughter's old Hyundai Elantra on CraigsList and FB Marketplace. Got numerous bites and eventually a good offer from one or the other site, I don't recall which. Pretty smooth transaction. Always met prospective buyers in a very public place. Allowed test drives with a photo of their license.
