According to Dr. Potato* and contrary to what you may have learned growing up, potatoes should not be wrapped in aluminum foil before being baked. Doing so results in spuds that are steamed, not baked, and leaves them soggy and limp, instead of tender and flaky. That said, poking holes with a fork prior to baking is still recommended.

This message brought to you by the Idaho Potato Commission, the National Association of Culinary Artists and the Ad Council.

*Dr. Potato is not a real doctor, but a team of tuber specialists, originally organized following the Irish Potato Famine.

Cat on a tin roof, dogs in a pile,
Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!!

What if you use a toothpick to poke holes instead of a fork?

Mar 1, 2021, 11:45 AM

Or a pocketknife? How does THAT impact the finished product?

Alton says use a 45g fork with 5 tines, never 4. 3mm deep.***

Had to look deep for this info, but apparently, if you do not have a fork available, snipped off ends of newly strung bass strings will work. Applying olive oil to said strings is recommended prior to use.

Yes. It is. Another way to get holes in the tater is to

Mar 1, 2021, 12:02 PM

use a tomato knife. I assume that's what it's called. A knife with a few sharp points coming off the end. It's sketchy and certainly opens self stabbing possibilities, but it's effective nonetheless.

I'd suggest doing it the way our pioneer forebears did.

.410 gauge birdshot, 1 shell per potato.

Going the hash brown route, eh?

It's why people gave up everything to come to America.***

I always do that before I wrap it in tinfoil but you don't

Mar 1, 2021, 1:56 PM [ in reply to And if'n you want to go NEXT LEVEL with your tater ]

have to tell me twice to not wrap something up.

2024 purple level memberringofhonor-greenr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct, the only time you wrap taters in foil is when camping

Mar 1, 2021, 1:52 PM

and you're tossing them into/near a bed of campfire coals. Otherwise, as someone said, you coat in olive oil and apply kosher salt liberally. You want that hard crusty skin on the outside...

A drunk will run a STOP sign, but a stoner will wait for it to turn green.
