If they want to compare to coaches, then players should also be able to be fired and kicked out of the school mid-season if they don’t perform well.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

I agree with him completely. I'm also open to being able to leave if your coach does. That eliminates the hypocrisy.

There you have it. I've always said Dabo was the most honest and ethical coach in college football.

New rule promotes cheating and it opens doors for more cheating and that's why Dabo would not be behind it. Cheaters like SEC programs would naturally be all for this kind of crap.

With the NCAA and ACC involved you will never get any common sense result though.

I’m just hung up on why the ACC’s “winter” meetings are in May!

Maybe they go to South America for the meeting?

I agree with everything Dabo said but it will never fly. There's too much logic and common sense involved.

Re: TNET: Dabo Swinney not a fan of proposed transfer rule

Feb 27, 2020, 9:43 AM

Of course he isn't. He spends a lot of time, money and energy to get these guys on campus and then some scumbag makes a few late night phone calls to a player who maybe isn't getting as many snaps as they think they should and, bam, that players gone for greener pastures. Now he's basically going to have to recruit every one of his players each season and, if he fails, there goes the depth of talent that separates us from many other teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree completely with Dabo

Feb 27, 2020, 9:52 AM

If this rule goes through the way it is, whenever a 4 or 5 star freshman that thinks they're an All-World talent doesn't start right away, they're going to threaten to transfer. It's gonna get messy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well of course the coaches aren't in favor of it

Feb 27, 2020, 10:11 AM

There might be one somewhere, but I've yet to hear a single coach come out and support this proposed rule change. It's a rule to benefit the players, not the coaches, and it's probably going to make their jobs a little more difficult. Big deal, that's what they get paid 10 million a year for. Figure it out.

Selfishly, i want CFB to remain unchanged, but i can still acknowledge the fact that this is, overall, a very positive change. There are already plenty of transfers as it is, and this would finally put an end to the absolutely ridiculous waiver process that's currently in place.

And i truly believe that the "CFB free agency" thing is being overblown. Most players are going to be happy where they are. The ones that are unhappy would've been considering transferring anyway, regardless of the rule change. Sure this makes it easier for them to do it, but i think that's fine.

The main problem that you think this fixes won't be fixed.

The NCAA still plans to use the waiver process for anyone who transfers more than once.

So with this policy in place, a player can leave for no reason at all and then the following year the same player can hire a lawyer to figure out some excuse to keep him from sitting out again.

Also you are only thinking about this from a football standpoint.

What about in basketball where you have a limited roster?

If a couple guys decide to leave a program on a whim after signing day then there is no way to recover 20% of the team's rotation. On most teams that essentially kills the next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hopefully that can be addressed as well. Waivers should be

Feb 27, 2020, 6:25 PM

much more difficult to obtain if a player has already used their free transfer. Waiver rules may still need to be tweaked as I've heard they are extremely archaic, but a player seeking a 2nd transfer should need a very legitimate case to have the waiver granted.

I don't know how it will play out with basketball, but I still support giving the players more options. It's silly that the transfer rules only apply to 5 sports (the ones that make money, obviously), and there's also a huge double-standard with coaches moving around freely and lying through their teeth in the process. One day a coach makes a statement that he's committed to the university of Colorado and literally the next day he's coaching at Michigan State. Should i feel bad for him that some of his players might want to transfer from Michigan State down the road? Hell no.

I can see UNC or Duke poaching a surprise superstar basketball player.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There's something very troubling about the ACC's statement..

Feb 27, 2020, 1:51 PM

... and it has nothing to do with the rule itself.

STATEMENT:

"The Atlantic Coast Conference released a statement earlier this month supporting a proposal that would allow athletes a one-time transfer option without restrictions.

The statement read: During the league's annual winter meetings (February 12-14) the ACC discussed the transfer environment and unanimously concluded that as a matter of principle we support a one-time transfer opportunity for all student-athletes regardless of sport.
"

The thing that is so troubling is the the ACC released a statement saying the issue was discussed and UNANIMOUSLY CONCLUDED ... the implication is that everyone in the ACC, commissioner, administrators, and coaches all got together and discussed this.

However, if Dabo wasn't asked his opinion -- as the highest profile Head Coach in the league in the most successful ACC program at the moment ... then who came to this conclusion? And why were ALL coaches not included in the discussion?

Could it be that they didn't want to open the floor to opinions and discussion other than what the administration wanted their statement to be?

That the administration is putting words into the other "supposed-to-be" participants' mouths is very troubling indeed ... <img border=">">">
