73-7 was almost history-making....

Oct 19, 2020, 5:44 PM

I checked some sites that had our scores going back to 1903.

In 1903, Clemson defeated Tech (I kid you not) by 73-0. That the worst defeat in Tech history that I could find. Maybe 1892 to 1902 had worse.

The game the other day was 73-7 - as you all know - and qualifies as the 2nd worst beating we've ever received by anyone.

So, our two most lopsided losses ever are to Clemson.

BTW, Clemson's coach in 1903 was John Heisman. After that loss, we hired Heisman to come to Tech. Thank God for that.

In 1894, we lost to Auburn by 94-0.

I still haven't forgiven Tech for stealing Heisman away from the Tigers.

I believe Clemson's first FB game was in 1896 against Furman (at Furman), which Clemson won 14-6, and played on Oct 31 that year. Walter Riggs was our coach. Riggs I believe came from Auburn and he simply adopted the same colors of blue and orange. Legend has it that the blue faded to purple after much uniform exposure to the uv's and laundering, hence "purple and orange". On a side note, I believe Riggs Hall was the first home of the Clemson College of Architecture, and as a Clemson architect, I still consider Riggs Hall the most beautiful building on campus.

Go Tigers!!!
