50 years ago today- Vietnam- the morning after

Sep 29, 2020, 8:22 PM

The morning after entering that ice cold OR and sitting upright to meet the face mask that rendered the pain-ending anesthesia, I slowly entered the conscious world and recalled the night before. Opening my eyes, I hesitantly and fearfully raised my head just high enough to see if there were two feet at the end of the bed (not knowing if an amputation had been necessary). Gave thanks to God that the doctor did not need to take that action and reflected on how lucky I had been to survive the night. The surgeon came by, gave me a summary of events, pointed to the bag of blood hooked to one of a few IV’s running into me, and said that it was his own blood that he had donated. I still get goosebumps just thinking what heroes all the medical workers are when tough conditions occur.

Well, that puts everything else into perspective. Thank you for sharing this experience, but most importantly, for your service!

your story. My Brother who piloted Choppers, Gunships and medivac, which he preferred, went down
on a medivac mission with 2 weeks left in 1969, a day after his 22nd birthday. See YouTube Dogtags and Body Bags, a Tribute to CWO Barry Alexander. How are you now? Did you ever completely recover. Has the VA treated you well?

Still noticeable limp, foot problems due to nerve damage, and other things you get accustomed to. Try to stay away from VA.

You are so right about the medical personnel. Although not a combat injury, I spent a couple of nights on the USS Sanctuary after an operation. I saw a lot of young soldiers and Marines come aboard and get taken care of by caring doctors, nurses, and support staff. My Navy Corpsman was certainly a huge asset to my platoon.

Glad you saw your two footsies when you looked down. I can’t imagine the trepidation. God bless and thanks again for your service.
