2020 O310 State is more like 2017 than 2019 O310 State.

And we beat them both. 2019 Bucknuts had three guys go in the first round, including #2 and #3 overall, and seven in the first three rounds. This team? Not so much.

Let's compare QBs.

Games

Keep this in mind when reading below.

Sacks
JF - 18
TL - 13
They struggle to protect Fields, who hasn't been great under pressure. He holds the ball too long and their line isn't as good this year. Almost half of those sacks (8) came against IU and NW, the only still-ranked teams they've played.

INTs
JF - 5
TL - 4
All 5 of Fields' picks came against guess who? Indiana and NW. The only good defenses they've played.

QBR Against Ranked Teams
JF - 107.68 (IU and NW) 30-57 for 414, 2/5 TD/INT, 27/113/1 Rushing
TL - 155.94 (ND and MIA) 54-77 for 614, 5/1 TD/INT, 22/124/2 Rushing
This is most telling to me. Fields is a good QB but he doesn't deliver in big games the Trevor does, especially not this year. Small sample size and anything can happen, but Fields has struggled where Lawrence has thrived. To be fair, they won both games, and Sermon ran WILD on NW so Fields didn't have to do much.

They're slow, they take bad angles to the ball, and they tackle poorly.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.


NW actually has the best scoring D in the B1G

And the fourth best yardage defense. But you're not wrong. Just goes to show how bad the rest of their schedule has been. Other than NW and IU, their opponents are 12-21.

Bad year for the B1G, and O310 State hasn't really impressed navigating their pathetic, advantageous schedule.
