2015, if only because the advances in S&C since then would give a likely size and speed advantage.

2015 Tigers and it's not even close.

Athletes are far superior to those 30 years ago. Plus, I think this team is more talented top to bottom.

1981 Tigers finished what they started.

2015. They didn't have the oculus back in 81.

The average weight of the 1981 OL

Oct 24, 2015, 11:17 PM

Was 247 lbs they'd be lucky to get a 1st down against the 2015 defense.

That's not true, they were much heavier than 247 . More like 305.

Go back and check the program, that was before they changed the blocking rules. Nebraska center Dave Remington was considered huge and he was 280. We didn't have a offensive linemen over 300 on the team.

My apologies Mr Rhettm. I finally saw the 1981 roster, and I couldn't believe my eyes. I had been going
On my memory, which is not a good idea. (class of 1969.) Anyway thanks for the info. Have a blessed day.

Re: The average weight of the 1981 OL

It isn't always about weight. My senior year was 81-82 and I was in the tiger band and went to every single game that year. I sat behind the Fridge in music appreciation class (music 210) and sat next to Terry Kinard and Andy Headen in Entymology (bugs) 200 spring semester 1982. The consensus on that team from talking to those guys was that the strength training is what put us in the position to win the national championship. Jeff Davis I believe still holds the Clemson bench press record. Our strength coach, George Dostal was the man and the result of his brand of strength training resulted in a team that was relatively injury free. We haven't had that since. In July of 1981 he posted a sign on the door to the weight room that simply said "11-0, Nebraska and the Orange Bowl".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dude, are u serious? If u were 280 then, you were massive

Oct 24, 2015, 11:48 PM [ in reply to Re: The average weight of the 1981 OL ]

look at the programs back then. Nobody on the team was near as big and strong as these kids are now. Strength training is light years ahead of where it was then, seriously man....,

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh no they were heavier than that

Oct 24, 2015, 11:30 PM [ in reply to The average weight of the 1981 OL ]

260-280 or so. On the defensive side the Fridge started out around 320 and just kept getting bigger.

You're talking linemen from the 60's there.

Re: Oh no they were heavier than that

Oct 24, 2015, 11:37 PM

Go goggle the roster our starting tackle Lee Naney was 244lbs, we had a 209lbs staring OG. You have to remember holding wasn't legal then, if a OL got his hands from his body it was a hold. After they changes the blocking rules OL went from 240 to 300 in less than 5 years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Like I said earlier, this team is more talented over all and

Oct 24, 2015, 11:20 PM

more physically dominating . . . but as others have pointed out, they haven't won them all . . . yet. I was in my prime in the 80's and reveled in our success then, but I'd be hard pressed to pick against this team.

Ive said this before, It's a lot different game...

Oct 24, 2015, 11:22 PM

...now than it was back then.

I have been there for both. Defenses are pretty close for each respective game play style. The biggest difference is the offense. We essentially ran the GT style triple option, fullback dive and a few sideline pass plays..no shotgun ever. Very rarely broke 35 points. Run oriented offense and tough gritty defenses won championship in those days.

Our modern offense is a far more complicated but also a higher reward animal. And thus for that reason our defense has to be up to similar play level. For that reason, the modern Tigers win most head to head matches with the beloved '81 Tigers by 10 points or so.

Did we just finish the 2015 season? Great win today but

Oct 24, 2015, 11:33 PM

I can see why nobody here coaches football.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

These kids would destroy the '81 team

Oct 24, 2015, 11:54 PM

Bigger, faster, stronger....maybe 4 guys from '81 would play on this team. Jeff Davis, Jeff Bryant, Terry Kinard, Perry Tuttle.....after that, no chance. These kids are much better athletes than back then,

I'm gonna go 2015 team. Those guys on the 81 team have to be pushing 55 years of age. No way they hold up.
