1981 Season

Sep 11, 2016, 4:25 PM

I remember the 2nd game that year. We really stunk it up against a very poor Tulane team. Was sitting there (in New Orleans) really frustrated about how poorly we had played and thinking "it's gonna be a long season". We weren't even ranked. No top 10, no top 25, nothing.
Wound up beating the defending National Champions the next week, won the ACC, defeated 4 highly ranked teams that year, went undefeated, and won the National Championship.
Seems to me all the above are still within reach.

We're just two games into the season - we just need......

to get things right so we're in good shape when the first "real" poll comes out in October. No reason for anyone to panic - it's just time to play the way we should be playing.

Good observation. I bet there are a lot of younger Tiger fans not aware of this. I hope this team can also find the will and desire to be great.

Yea but that team was a bunch of nobody's and nobody expected much.
This years team has some of the best skill players in the nation.
Supposedly the best QB and WR, top 5 running back, TE.
Not to mention a host of other highly rated skill guys.
The start of this season is not the same thing.
The 81 team were over achievers and so far this season under achievers.

Believe our goals are still within our reach,... don't you?

Bunch of nobodies?

Sep 11, 2016, 10:07 PM [ in reply to Re: 1981 Season ]

The Fridge, homer Jordan, Perry Tuttle, Jeff Davis, Terry Kinard, Igwebuike, Jaime Farr, Jeff Bryant, Kevin Mack.
They may not have had a high ranking, but that team was loaded. Stick badminton.

We were bad against Tulane that year, and we beat a really good UNC team and UGA team...The tigers refused to lose, and although this might ruffle some feathers, that team was more physical it seemed like than we are this year....We had all those UGA turds in the stands and Herschel Walker on the field and the Georgia win was probably the most gratifying win I ever saw in person except maybe the 28-9 beating we put on the cluckers in '76

I hear about this game every year when we pull one out against a crappy team. And we beat UNC 10-7 that year too or something real close

I was there too, Bro. I was not sure how good we were because even at the end of the season, Clemson was being lambasted by the media for even paying Wofford. I remember Hatcher hit the scoreboard on the ceiling with a pregame punt the only Ray Guy had done. Was glad to get it and spend the weekend in NO. The next week was huge good news. Stayed over and watched the Saints upset the Rams. May our fortunes so improve!

We beat Auburn only 7-6 and still went undefeated. It's destiny
