Powerball got to $300 million a few weeks ago, so I bought

Jan 19, 2021, 3:27 PM

$6 worth when I was buying cheap beer to try and mentally escape my life... and some guy behind me asked me how much the lottery was up to. I said "I think about $300 million", and he looked at me as serious as he could and said "that's money worth killin' somebody over"..and just kept staring at me.

I was all

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you wouldn’t kill someone for $300 million?***

because I was bored yesterday

Jan 19, 2021, 3:39 PM

I spent all of 30 seconds figuring out that if you bought 262,144 individual powerball tickets, all with unique number combinations, your odds of winning go from 1 in 292,201,338, to 1 in 557 or something like that....

it'd only cost you $512k+ (cash) for 524,600x better chances

that's all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

These folks tried that years ago

Jan 19, 2021, 3:41 PM

didn't work. They probably had the winning ticket, but lost it.

Just buy every possible ticket

Jan 19, 2021, 3:41 PM [ in reply to because I was bored yesterday ]

and pray no one else matches your winning number

The problem is there's no way you can physically

Jan 19, 2021, 3:43 PM

do that, there's no time to incrementally do it.

you could get the little scantron sheets prepped ahead of

Jan 19, 2021, 3:50 PM

time, no? over 4 days leading up to the drawing (just because I don't know if you can buy tix for '2 drawings from now'), you and your 'team' hit up various gas stations and grocery stores all day and every day 'til they're out of paper

it wouldn't take long to see if that's possible or not....dunno

See below.***

Explain? Seems like if you had a cpu give every possible

Jan 19, 2021, 3:50 PM [ in reply to The problem is there's no way you can physically ]

Numbers. Then had a lottery ticket printing machine and worked around the clock for one week that many could be made. Or have several machines and several teams printing each w their own set of numbers.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

302,575,350 possible tickets.

Jan 19, 2021, 4:31 PM

I'm not well versed in the Mega Millions timeline, but you say it's 1 week, so I'm going to go with that.

1 week = 7d/wk*24hr/d*60min/hr*60sec/hr = 604,800 seconds

So to purchase all the tickets, you must purchase 500.2899 per second, and that's literally every single second.

Do you still think this is possible?

How long does it take to process/purchase each ticket? I'm just guesstimating it takes 30 seconds to input the number, register the ticket, and pay. (again not being well versed I have no idea, but 30 seconds seems the bare minimum)

You need at least 15,000 machines.
