New Catcher Could Improve Gaffney

I won't be surprised if Gaffney doesn't take a massive leap forward offensively next season. Not having to catch any with Prather being healthy and the new transfer portal catcher coming in, will free him up physically and mentally. Catching in college is an absolute mental and physical grind that's not limited to just games. These guys catch simulated games and bullpens all year long.

The backup catchers put in just as much work as the starters on a daily basis. It's amazing the effort JJ put in this year and still remained relatively healthy.

I'm not sure how much Gaffney caught at Purdue but if he can take that off his plate it could free him up to be better at the plate. He's easily the best defensive 1B on the team.

Cooper Ingle was really good at turning off "catcher's" brain when he was hitting. Some guys find it harder to turn off, especially backups, due to having to concentrate so much on the game planning and pitch calling that doesn't come second nature for them.

Catchers currently on roster:

Jarrell
Prather
Marshall
Burd
Savoie

No way we are going to carry 5 catchers, with roster cuts probably 3 catchers will be the norm with 17-18 pitchers and 13-14 to fill in the other 7 spots (including DH)

I would look to see at least 2 of those in the portal

I think Burd and Marshall would be the two. I don’t know much about Prather, but he did well in limited at bats last year. Marshall hasn’t really done much in his time, and I haven’t heard a single thing about Burd. They might want to carry three primary catchers, in which case Burd is the odd man out. Savoie and Gaffney I think will be limited to moving to catcher during games if Jarrell gets pinch hit for.

Burd is Shane Monahan's nephew. Bigger than Marshall and Prather. We shall see how it all shakes out

Has nothing to do with his lack of success last year and Jack Crighton is better at 1B than Gaffney…..as the year progressed he made more and more boneheaded decisions over there so no he’s not the best at all
