with the "even if they lose their conference title game they should be in" talking point. if that is the case id sit my starters so they dont get injured before the playoff games start.

Conference championship games with teams with more than one loss

should be elimination games. Winning should count for something and losing more than two games should eliminate a team from the playoffs unless there are not enough P4 teams with two or less loses to fill out the bracket.

why not just crow the team with the best conference record as conference champ if we have reached the point where the loser gets an auto bid

Seems a stretch. I don't think the SEC is all that good this year, no matter what ESPN wants us to think (I think the Big 10 champ will bring it home). That said, I'd take a UGA who lost to Texas over 2 loss UNLV who couldn't even win the Mountain West.
That said, they should change the playoffs dramatically:
Champions and runner up of each P4 conference go. (8) Champion of each G5 conference goes (5) If highest-ranked independent is ranked in the top 10, they go, if not, top ranked other team goes. (1)
Teams are seeded based on coach's poll, with the top 2 teams getting a bye. Here is this year's playoff based on that (Obviously predicting off the current standings and rankings):
Round 1
Oregon (11-0) (Big Ten Champ) - BYE
Boise State (11-1) (Mountain West Champ) vs. Arizona State (9-2) (Pac 12 Champ)
SMU (10-1) (ACC Champ) vs. Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (9-2) (Sun Belt Champ)
Notre Dame (10-1) (Independent) vs. Ohio Bobcats (9-3) (Mid-American Conference Champ)
Ohio State (10-1) (Big Ten Runner Up) vs. Jacksonville State (8-3) (Conference USA Champ)
Georgia (10-2) (SEC Runner Up) vs. Colorado (9-3) (Big 12 Runner Up)
Miami (10-1) (ACC Runner Up) vs. Army (9-1) (AAC Runner Up)
Texas (10-1) (SEC Champ) - Bye
There are a ton of advantages to this system.
First, because you're capturing all conference champs, you would absolutely capture all undefeated teams and usually all 1 loss teams. No team with a legitimate claim to the title could be left out.
Second, it rewards winning, as the highest ranked teams get a bye or get an easy opponent in Round 1.
Third, there is a huge potential of Cinderella stories which we do not currently have in college football, which is one of the things people like best about basketball.
Fourth, we get some very interesting matchups in each round. I think a lot of us would watch UGA against Deion or Miami against Army. In the second round, our matchups would likely be Oregon/Boise State, SMU/Notre Dame, Ohio State/Georgia, and Miami/Texas.
Fifth, it ensures parity across college football rather than having two super conferences. Yes, you can join the SEC and make a lot of television revenue, but the tradeoff is that you won't have as good of odds to make the playoffs. I think we would see players leaving the SEC to join other conferences instead of the rich getting richer and richer. That keeps other conferences relevant and ensures more competitive balance, which is the #1 marker of popularity in a sport.
Sixth, it's not black box. It's extremely clear what the criteria is for making the playoffs. There's no debate about what record a 10-1 Miami would have in the SEC and who's the better team, when we have no idea of knowing. You know exactly what you need to do, and if you fail to do it, you won't make the playoffs.
Last but not least, it takes the bias out of the playoffs. ESPN can rave about the SEC all they want, they're only getting two most years, and three in the years where there's not a qualifying independent. There's no need for a biased playoff committee. Traditional media is dying, and the AP poll is made entirely irrelevant by my system.
Yes, there are some tradeoffs in that while you capture the BEST team, the 14 are likely not the best 14 teams. I think we all know Tennessee would beat the Ohio Bobcats like a drum most of the time. But that's fine. In the NFL, we know the Vikings are a better team than the Falcons, but they're not winning their division. The simple fact is, basing a playoff system off of preconceived notions and guesswork is idiotic, and college football is the only sport to do that. I'd rather make sure I capture all champions and those with the best claim, then prove who's the best on the field.
