I'm dealing with polyester primer. Moisture is the moral enemy of polyester primer. I schedule shooting this paint according to the humidity.
Now this hood is lagging behind other demountable body parts because of the severe damage which requires more than primer and sandpaper. None of the other parts had such damage. The car's hood must have been parked under a walnut tree. That or the children's mother played yard darts with rocks every day.
My first action on the body is to seam seal the gutters. I'm waiting on that before I dic around with anything else.
I have a few spots of bare metal, tiny and more than a few, which need the 2K epoxy primer so first after the gutters I'll shoot the sealer along with the other spots.
The 4 hr average was due to only prepping and applying body putty today. I usually work until my goal is met which often takes me 6+ hours but today was different.
The humidity is predicted to drop below 50% tomorrow so I'll sand those lumps on the hood and put another 2-4 coats of high build on it. Then it gets moved to the back and the car body takes center stage.
Preemptive strike:
You realize, of course, I'm not shooting paint and clear until the temps are 65 degrees and rising and the humidity is below 65%. So I got plenty of time...

That much primer is going to take a month to cure

And then you'll have sand half of it off, and then seal it. Why so much primer?

The first two coats sat for several months and so will the last 3.

It's about sand scratch swelling. I sanded the original paint and the first two coats of highbuild with 180 grit and need enough buildup to knock down the orange peel with 180 grit.
Then I'll be chasing sand scratches rather than trying to fight orange peel with finer and finer grits paper when I'm prepping for base.
Also, I have zero confidence in my ability to spray paint which is a great part of my MO.

You sanded orange peel with 180 grit?

If you need more than 400-600 grit you may want to rethink what/how you are spraying it and surface prep.
I've never heard of anyone sanding orange peel with that level of coarseness.

I'll probably do a lot you've never seen before if you've spent time with people who know what they are doing. I've seen many who use either 180 on a block or 220 on a DA.
With several coats I can cut corners by using guile coat and a DA sander with 220 on it. I used a block because I was looking for flaws rather than trying to make everything flat.

The finish color is 040 Mercedes black so there zero room for error.

Imo, painting a 45 year old car black is one of the most challenging things a professional restoration shop would take on. Much less a 1st project for someone whose only experience with spray is ceiling texture.
6 coats of HB primer is excessive and Mclovin is right, I will sand most of it off. As you can see from the photo I got burned through the 2 coats of beige to the underlying gray 2K high build primer.
That's what the stuff is for and was my intent when I sprayed everything gray then changed colors. I'm ignorant of auto painting but I'm not stupid.

Ah, mon ami, I am working with zis polyester primer, you see. Ah, but le moisture! It is ze mortal enemy of ze polyester primer, oui? So, I plan ze painting around ze humidity, always watching ze weather like a hawk.
Now, zis hood—oh là là, it is lagging behind ze other demountable parts, eh? Such damage, très sévère! It needs more zan just ze primer and sandpaper, no? None of ze other pieces had zis problem. I tell you, zis hood, it must have been under a walnut tree! Or maybe ze mother of ze children was throwing yard darts with ze rocks every day—c’est incroyable, non?
My first task, it is to seal ze seams of ze gutters. Until zat is done, I will not "dic around" with anything else. You understand, oui? I must wait.
Zere are a few spots of bare metal—petit, mais nombreux. Zese need ze 2K epoxy primer. So, after ze gutters, I will shoot ze sealer and cover zese spots too. Zat is ze plan.
Today? Eh bien, I only prepped and applied ze body putty—4 hours on average, because zat was ze task. Normally, I work until ze goal is done, maybe 6 hours, maybe more. But today, ah, it was different.
Tomorrow, ze humidity, it will drop below 50%, enfin! I will sand ze lumps on ze hood, zen add 2 to 4 coats of high build. Après ça, ze hood goes to ze back, and ze car body—it takes ze center stage, like ze star of ze show.
Ah, and before you ask: Non, non, I will not be painting ze color and ze clear until ze temperatures are 65 degrees and rising, and ze humidity is below 65%. So, I have plenty of time, mon cher. Patience, toujours la patience!

My project didn't turn out nearly as nice, but I only committed about 2 hours and a 6" bristle-brush to it.

In my lifetime I have completely restored two Chevy's from the ground up. I mean by taking them completely apart fixing, replacing, sanding and painting everything from the frame, all through the inside from front to back, from the bottom to the top. My first one was a limited addition !968 Chevy Caprice, and my second one was a 1967 super sport Chevy Chevelle, both of them looked like they just came off the show room floor with some modifications that made them better than they were when new.
I was much younger than I am now, I was mid 30s with the Caprice, and then I done a the Chevelle when I was about 42-43. I thoroughly enjoyed doing them both and I can't express the pride I had in myself with each of them. That's a very lot of work with having to solve problems along the way, but it was worth minute that it took from start to finish. Every car man should tackle that job at least once in his lifetime bc it makes you appreciate your vehicle a lot more then on, as you will find out, enjoy and never get in a rush with no part of the job!!!

I'm looking for a 60s model chevy for the 283 engine and powerglide I bought.

Not that it matters but the engine is all original and has the exhaust manifold and the intake/carb with it and even the original torque converter and the flywheel. I'd take anything from a GMC pickup to a Chevy II Nova. The block is covered with oil which indicates a front crank seal was the issue so I get to tear it down.
The last serious wrenching I did was to put a piston in the 380SE engine. No, I didn't rebuild it when it jumped timing, I did a valve job replacing a handful of valves and replaced one piston and got another 20K out of the Mercedes gas engine. That wasn't why I junked it for the diesel thats in it now.
That 5 cyl MB diesel on617 is (arguably) the best engine ever made. Next to it the slant 6 dodge and next to that the 283, imo. I've seen all three go over 300K miles with oil and filter changes regular.
