He's bored. What should he do, and where should he eat?
I suggested Mac's Speed Shop to eat. What y'all got? He's not a drinker, but spends plenty of time in bars because he loves music

The rest of the time The Beaver wouldn't be a great place for a non-drinker.

The Tipsy Burro Saloon & Cantina, and either place will catch the occasional touring artist for a mid-week gig, but those shows are rare. The Beaver is still great on nights they're depending only on the jukebox.

Cajun Queen - good food. They have Jazz every night, starting around 5:30. Take the little train to the 8th and Hawthorne stop and walk 2 blocks up 7th Street away from Uptown.
Cabo fish Taco - it's in Noda. You can hop the train.
Essex - nice spot with good food and nice outdoor dining. At Trade and Tryon in the center of Uptown.
Fine dining - Bernardino, or Luce for Italian.

and the Visulite to see if any bands are playing that he might like. That's probably the best cross-section of live music during the week that isn't local. Comet Grill or Smokey Joe's are the best bets for local bands worth seeing.

RH, gotta axe about Smokey Joe's... late 90's there was a Smokey Joe's on Tyvola. Played there a couple times. Don't think it's there anymore. Is the one you're talking about same ownership as the old one, or is it some new and different joint?

but I'm not positive. I really didn't pay much attention to it until guys I knew started playing there a lot. At one time many years back it was a regular hang for motorcycle enthusiasts. Not doctors and lawyers on shiny Harleys and new leathers, but the kind of folk you really don't want to be around when they're drinking. Or, at all. It's cleaned up from that reputation in the last 10 years or so, but they've had a couple of gunfights there in the last 6 or 7 years.

Gotcha. I'm thinking maybe the same family owned both and ended up selling the one on Tyvola.

I like that place, but I stopped going after the last gun fight in the parking lot. Cool bar though. It's weird, because it's not in a bad section of town.

If so, HOW?
It was the hot place 25 years ago when the Hornets were still playing across the street and all the business parks were vibrant, but I have no clue how it would still be viable now.

I lived near J&J briefly. Terrible area - not because anything bad was going on, just boring. There's nothing over there bar wise, except for Chili's, so I think JnJ win by default.

The upstairs is a bar though w bar food and I’m sure it’s still fantastic food since the fine dining is so good. You would need reservations though bc it’s busy and not many tables in the cellar.

Always thought Mert’s food was a salty bunch of overrated mush. The diamond’s meat and three fare was more legit soul food than Mert’s and actually tasted great.
Much preferred the Caribbean food right around the corner at Anntonys. That location closed I guess but heard they reopened at lake Norman.

😆 - well, I'm quite fond of salt. I do love the fried barbeque chicken at Diamond. I haven't been to either in a while. Don't think I went to the Caribbean place, unless you're talking about the Jamaican place where the old mom cooked. They closed that place.

At the HI go to the front desk and say Dawn Staley is out front. All the chickens run outside.
At Greyhound I make an announcement the bus is leaving in 5 for Selma. All you white racist board now.
Or North Main there's a drag queen called Ragin Cajun. He's a bunch of fun.
