South Carolina Highway 39 is a 100.89-mile state highway that that wanders through the midlands from the south end at US 278 near Williston to the north end at US 221 near Laurens, going through Springfield, Salley, Perry, Wagener, Monetta, Ridge Spring, Saluda, Chappells, and Cross Hill. Taylor Hearn is from Williston.
Near the south end of SC 39 is the Savannah River Site, referred to by old-timers as the Savannah River Plant or the "bomb factory". It is a 310-square-mile area in Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell counties on the Savannah River owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed by Fluor Corporation, Newport News Nuclear, and Honeywell International. The site was built in the 1950s by Dupont to produce plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons, though no actual nuclear weapons were ever produced there. While the site still produces tritium, none of the 5 reactors are in use today, but 2 of the reactor buildings are used to store and consolidate nuclear materials. SRS is also home of the Savannah River National Laboratory to provide R&D support. SRS is the only operating radiochemical separations facility in the U.S.

The Laurens County end is at Cold Point - now just a couple of closed stores and a railroad crossing. One of the stores used to be famous for having numerous animal skulls of many species on the roof. My frequently mentioned favorite restaurant at Chappells recently closed due to the legislative requirement of expensive liquor license insurance.

39 - Clemson Football has had 39 First Round NFL Draft Picks
21

Banks McFadden was the first Clemson football player to be selected in the First Round of the NFL Draft in 1940. It took nine years for Clemson to produce another 1st Round pick. Starting the Danny Ford years (aka the 80s), Clemson began regularly producing 1st Round picks!
Clemson has now produced 30 First Round NFL Draft selections!
Tigernet points out that Nate Wiggins, Clemson’s 2024 First Round pick, is the 39th First Round NFL Draft pick in Clemson’s history.
“Clemson notes on Wiggins' selection - Wiggins became the 78th NFL Draft selection in Dabo Swinney’s head coaching tenure and the 18th first-round pick of Swinney’s tenure. Both are the most of any active FBS head coach. - Wiggins became Clemson’s 39th first-round pick in NFL Draft history.”
https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-nfl/news/clemsons-nate-wiggins-picked-in-nfl-draft-first-round-by-ravens-44090
It is worth noting that Winsipedia claims that Clemson has had 40 First Round NFL picks. All other sources agree that Clemson has had 39 First Round NFL picks.
In looking over the draft history, however, it is difficult to find more than 39. According to Wikipedia, for example, Clemson has produced the following 39 First Round NFL Selections:
1. RB Banks McFadden: 1940 (4) Brooklyn Dodgers 2. DB/RB Bob Gage: 1949 (6) Pittsburgh Steelers 3. DL/OL Lou Cordileone: 1960 (12) NY Giants 4. TE Bennie Cunningham: 1976 (28) Pittsburgh Steelers 5. WR Jerry Butler: 1979 (5) Buffalo Bills 6. QB Steve Fuller 1979 (23) KC Chiefs 7. DL Jim Stuckey 1980 (20) SF 49ers 8. DL Jeff Bryant: 1982 (6) Seattle Seahawks 9. WR Perry Tuttle: 1982 (19) Buffalo Bills 10. DB Terry Kinard: 1983 (10) NY Giants 11. DL Willim Perry: 1985 (22) Chicago Bears 12. RB Terrence Flagler: 1987 (25) SF 49ers 13. DB Donnell Woolford: 1989 (11) Chicago Bears 14. DL Chester McGlockton: 1992 (16) LA Raiders 15. LB Wayne Simmons: 1993 (15) GB Packers 16. DL Trevor Pryce: 1997 (28) Denver Broncos 17. LB Anthony Simmons: 1998 (15) Seattle Seahawks 18. DB Antuan Edwards: 1999 (25) GB Packers 19. WR Rod Garner: 2001 (15) Washington Redskins 20. DB Tye Hill: 2006 (15) SL Rams 21. DL Gaines Adams: 2007 (4) TB Buccaneers 22. RB C.J. Spiller: 2010 (9) Buffalo Bills 23. WR DeAndre Hopkins: 2013 (27) Houston Texans 24. WR Sammy Watkins: 2014 (4) Buffalo Bills 25. QB Deshaun Watson: 2017 (12) Houston Texans 29. DL Clelin Ferrell: 2019 (4) Oakland Raiders 30. DL Christian Wilkins: 2019 (13) Miami Dolphins 31. DL Dexter Lawrence: 2019 (17) NY Giants 32. LB Isaiah Simmons: 2020 (8) Arizona Cardinals 33. DB A.J. Terrell: 2020 (16) Atlanta Falcons 34. QB Trevor Lawrence: 2021 (1) Jacksonville Jaguars 35. RB Travis Etienne: 2021 (25) Jacksonville Jaguars 36. DL Myles Murphy: 2023 (28) Cincinnati Bengals 37. DL Bryan Bresee: 2023 (29) NO Saints 38. DB Nate Wiggins: 2024 (30) Baltimore Ravens
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Clemson_Tigers_in_the_NFL_draft
Going into this year’s (2024) NFL Draft, ClemsonTigers.com provided the following statistic:
“Clemson has had at least one first-round draft choice in nine of the last 11 years. Clemson is one of only five schools with at least one first-round pick in at least eight of the last 11 drafts, alongside Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State.”
https://clemsontigers.com/what-to-watch-for-2024-nfl-draft/
With Wiggins' selection, make that statistic now at least one First Round Draft pick in 10 of the last 12 years!
Outstanding!!

39 - Clemsons First Bowl Team was in 39

21

Not sure how many of us were around for Clemson’s first bowl game. No doubt it was a lot of fun being a new experience for our Tigers!
Clemson’s first ever bowl appearance was in the 1939 Cotton Bowl (played on January 1, 1940). In order to go to the Cotton Bowl, Clemson had to obtain permission from the Southern Conference. According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Jess Neely’s last Clemson team won eight games in the regular season with just one loss to Tulane. The 8-1 Tigers were rewarded with an invitation to play Boston College in the fourth Cotton Bowl, but Clemson first had to get permission from the Southern Conference, which they immediately granted. The 1939 season not only resulted in Clemson’s first bowl appearance but also the Tigers’ first first-team All-American, Banks McFadden.”
https://clemsontigers.com/1940-cotton-bowl-cu-vs-bc/#:~:text=The%201939%20Football%20Season,Cotton%20Bowl%20in%20Dallas%2C%20TX.
Pregame controversy:
According to Wikipedia, the game included a horrible injustice:
The star player on the Boston College team was running back Lou Montgomery, who was the first Black student-athlete in B.C.'s history. Sportswriters used adjectives like "flashy" and "brilliant" to describe his running ability and his skill at evading anyone trying to tackle him. He was an important part of B.C.'s successful season, and very popular with the fans. … And when Boston College received its invitation to the Cotton Bowl, the President of the Cotton Bowl's Athletic Association, Curtis Sanford, announced that Montgomery would not be allowed to participate, and that he had discussed this with "officials at Boston College," who agreed. Sanford asserted that keeping him out of the game was "advisable...in view of the general Texas attitude regarding Negroes." The story was reported as if Montgomery too agreed with the decision, although some fans believed he felt there was no other option but to accept it. … In mid-January 1940, the Boston Veterans of Foreign Wars gave Montgomery an award for "sportsmanship, citizenship, and athletic ability," and praised him for his "self-effacement."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Cotton_Bowl_Classic
We all recognize there is still work to do in race relations today. But that is truly unimaginable!!
As for the game:
Neely never had an issue allowing McFadden to improvise, if a player came back to the huddle and told McFadden that a certain play might work, the All-American would instruct his teammate to see if the defensive player made the same mistake twice. If he did, McFadden would expose him on the next play call.
“Every now and then they would make a play up on the field,” Neely said. “If I don’t recognize a play, I’m sure Boston coach Frank Leahy won’t.” … On the last play of the first quarter, Bru Trexler punted to BC’s Charlie O’Rourke, who fielded the punt on the Clemson 40 and returned it to the 13. Two running plays lost 10 yards, but on third down Frank Davis gained six. Alex Lukachik then kicked a 34-yard field goal to put the Eagles up, 3-0.
Clemson’s scoring drive began when McFadden returned an Eagle punt to the 33. Charlie Timmons rushed for 15 yards in two plays, and two plays after that, McFadden hit Wister Jackson with a 16-yard pass to the Eagle 20. Timmons ran the final 20 yards in three carries, but Shad Bryant missed the extra point.

The Game’s Importance:
Ultimately, Clemson held on for the victory! According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Clemson’s 6-3 victory over Boston College in the 1940 Cotton Bowl at the end of the 1939 season is a key moment in the school’s football history for many reasons. First, it was Clemson’s first bowl game. Second, it concluded Clemson’s first top-20 season (No. 12) in the AP poll. Third, the Tigers defeated a ranked team (No. 11) for the first time.
Jess Neely’s team finished the year with a 9-1 record, the first nine-win season in school history, with the only loss coming by a 7-6 score to a Tulane team that finished No. 5 in the AP poll.”

I can't help wondering what the score would have been if the BC player had been allowed to play.
