Dabo's Salary

For the life of me I cannot figure out what Dabo's salary has to do with anything concerning the performance of the football team over the last several years. And for the record, I don't really GAS what anyone's salary is. That's none of my business.
When the Braves decide to pay Ozuna $15 million, is he worth it? The Braves front office does. Does he EARN it every time he steps up to the plate? Not remotely. But they do know what he's capable of and THAT'S what they're paying him for. The past performance warrants the salary.
Two national championships, payoffs, 10-win seasons, and....AND all the while graduating players and keeping them out of the headlines during the season and off.
All this Dabo's salary stuff sounds a lot like the "distribution of wealth" garbage you hear in politics. Because the ONLY way anyone could have possibly earned that much money is by exploiting someone else.
Quite frankly, I ain't buying it. Good for Dabo. How about a raise?

So at what point does he begin to be held accountable for the recent decline in performance? The ACC is not good.
And for the record I do think he is worth the money. But he's not trending in the right direction.

Is he not held accountable every Saturday? Here's a guy that shares the success and takes the blame. The team is currently 10-2. And stands a good chance to better last year's record or at worse finish with the same record. And as we are reminded ad infinitum, with less talent and less back-up and poor position coaching.
The man isn't paid according to the whims of the media, social media or Tnet. If he was, we may as well be Auburn.
I agree with just about everyone on here that we can do better. I'm frustrated by the offense, defense and special teams. But here's an inconvenient truth, So is he. And who stands more to lose in this if the "recent decline" continues? Us? nope. I'll wait until we truly are at rock bottom. Not just anticipated or imagined. Then and only then will there be a need for accountability.

Judge that goes both ways with BB. And on another note why does so many feel like they know the happenings inside the athletic department. What evidence is going to be brought to TNet members. He wins a lot of games and he graduates a lot of kids. Neff would probably chuckle at some of this stupidity. He will leave when he figures out he cannot be competitive with those that use the bag men, but he will not be fired.

"The team is currently 10-2"? Which team? I'd honestly be surprised if we finish 10-2. I hope so, but I think 9-3 is probably more accurate. 9-4 post-season.

Let's say Dabo and Clemson mutually agreed to part ways at the end of this season, with both parties agreeing that neither owed the other any money. Thus, making Dabo available to take a college coaching job with another college FB team.
Is there any college fb team in any conference that would hire Dabo for 11 million dollars a year and give him a 5 year contract at that salary?
And would they let him bring his current staff with him and pay them the same salary as they are currently getting?

If we won't Dabo to be the coach of Clemson it's going to take that salary. The reason why is he can get that salary from other teams. As far as Dabo being held accountable, I don't really see your point of that. Told him accountable you'd have to fire him.

I went to Clemson 1967-1971 and the head coach was Frank Howard. Bear Bryant was head coach at Alabama. For homecoming one year we played Auburn with Pat Sullivan as their QB and he was a Heisman Trophy winner. They beat us 44-0 at Clemson. Most seasons were 6-4 and life went on. Most of the message board writers are whiners. Dabo is one of the best coaches in college football, lucky to have him. NIL money has changed the landscape. Clemson is not Texas or Ohio State relative to NIL money. Enjoy life more and hopefully you can retire living good like me.

Pay for performance is a generally accepted concept in the business world. Dabo is receiving top tier compensation and has arguably under-performed on the field the last several years. Hence the discussions.

So.....cut his pay until it improves? Fire him altogether? Pay him more so he'll win?
Pay him for what he has accomplished or what the market rate for high profile, championship winning coach is currently? And what should that rate be? What will his buyout be knowing that if he doesn't do what Dabo did he's out?
I think the current (or even the last two years) performance of the team and the head coaching salary are two different discussions. But it seems to make it's way in every time the team under performs or doesn't perform to everyone's liking.

He makes $11 million a year. He is the second highest paid coach in college football. He’s proven that he can win national championships. When his teams fall far short of that, as we have for several years now, people are naturally going to wonder why he is paid so much relative to current results.

JK that contract was not signed this year. He would have gotten 11 mill anywhere he wanted to go when he signed that deal. Do you even have any idea of the terms of the contract? Didn’t think so. Don’t you have a basketball practice to oversee or something?

I was resisting this, but couldn't help it.
The highest paid coach right now is none other Kirby Smart at $13 mil. Back to Back championships, perennial playoff contender. Do we really need to go into the other things that UGA is known for under his leadership? Is this the future or your ROI you're looking at for your $11 mil?
What the UNIVERSITY is getting for their return, not necessarily the fan base.
Dawg fans yelling that Kirby is overpaid? I think not. Could be, but I doubt it. But I can hope that the BOT at Georgia and any other powers that be are more than suggesting that the football program clean up their act.

His salary is median anymore... you see what Indiana just paid their coach?
It's the lay of the land...
How soon we forget Dabo turned down raises along the way to get his assistants higher pay... resulting in higher quality coaching...

Won 2 national championships, multiple ACC championships, has the most wins in the ACC and you want to bring up return on investment.

So the salary is an investment and not a reward for what he has done over the last 13 years? This business truly is "what have you done for me lately" isn't it?
And if we are going to go ahead and treat it that way, what is your recommended course of action if you were brokering this deal?
The university is paying him the amount that they feel he is worth. Apparently, there are some that feel he is no longer worth it.
Personally, I don't always equate a person's value with the amount of money they make.

Sure you can. Unless you're saying that the only way an $11 mill salary is justifiable is to be in the playoffs every year.
Again, from a fan's perspective, one doesn't have much to do with the other. Now, collectively, all those that are contributing to said salary can certainly decide not to contribute if we end up in the Pop Tart bowl every year. Certainly their prerogative. It's not mandatory.

Gundy is the 17th highest paid coach right now at ~7.7M per year. Talk about overpaid! They're 3-7 and dead last in the Big 12. He's significantly overpaid compared to Dabo, as many others are, but that's another conversation.
Clemson is ranked 17th in the CFP rankings.
So, it's simple. Cut Dabo's salary 3.4M to make him the 17th highest paid coach to match his field performance.
That would mean he would get paid about the same as the head coach at Kansas, and about 1.5M less than Stoops at Kentucky.
Does that seem good to everyone?

why not? Is it his fault we are not in the SEC or BIG-10? You don;t think there is massive bias to those two conferences? SEC is going to be upset if they do not get 5 in the playoffs... Indiana is higher ranked (this week) than every SEC team aside from Texas (who just joined the SEC)...
This entire NCAA model is going to fall apart... cannot sustain this insanity...

Okay fine. Dabo keeps his fat checks, and his coaches keep their fat checks, and the program/school is happy with 3 or 4 losses each year. We make it to the irrelevant bowl games and become a mid-tier, okay program in an irrelevant conference. The powers that be will not allow that Clemson into playoffs having multiple losses in a weak conference. That’s where it’s headed. And if that’s the case, then stop charging top contender/elite prices on football tickets. Who wants to keep forking out thousands of dollars each weekend to watch Clemson have a “good game” versus an App State or a Wake Forest? You think the money Dabo is paid just comes out of nowhere?

If the OP can say that Dabo is entitled to $11 million based on past achievements while there is a current crap product on the field that fans pay small fortunes each weekend to see, why can’t I use this argument? Fans will just stop paying their money and time. It can work both ways.

No coaching a football team is not worth 11 million....any person...any team.
Someone like steph curry who is making 60 million a year is certainly not worth it either, people will try to fool you and point to tv numbers and revenue of team and overseas data and try to convince you that he's made billions and billions for the warriors and he is certainly worth it............no.....this is all a little magic game. playing a sports game is very insignificant to society and if the sport itself didn't even exist something will always arise in its place.
History had plenty of "athletes" and games in the past but you never here about them because games are just a distraction.

You are missing the problem that CFB has, and that is that all the money is currently on the sidelines and not on the field. That has to change.
I notice you mention Ozuna, great example. He is a player, not a coach. The players have the skills that are truly scarce, and therefore valued highly. Coaching has to be a much lower paying job because far more people can do it. See: NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL....

Several factors are in play when it comes to coaches salary's. 1. Past results. 2. Potential results. 3. Value to their school. 4. Current results. 5. Integrity of the program. 6. Graduate players.
The most important one right now is the value to Clemson. If Dabo left, the program would go back to the Bowden years. There would be a new coach every 4 years. I think he deserves a raise for the value he brings to Clemson. People will say everyone can be replaced. I really don't think Dabo can be replaced. He's worth every dollar and then some.

You have no idea what would happen with our program if Dabo left.

However, if you are concerned with returning to the Bowden years, you should be worried about the last four years. We are trending that way NOW, with Dabo fully in charge.
Thus the concern many of us have.
This doesn’t justify $11 million a year.
