However, it needs to come at the expense of the massive increase in administrators school systems have seen over the past 20 years.

who ever knew food was important for learning? In the early 80's, I remember getting home cooked meals in elementary school, actual food. It was right about 1982 or so when they started serving us prison food. I wonder what happened?

Who ever said healthier food was a horrible idea?

Was the program sabotaged due to political reasons, or was the implementation just bad? Given the fact that pretty much all top down mandates don't ever go the way they were intended to, that's likely the cause of failure.

For the third time, the article is wrong in saying that the Federal government has no say in making meal standards if they are giving money to said school.

It. It’s really incredible you would take so much time responding and not read the article, why is that? Does your employer get to dictate what you eat because they pay you? Keep in mind, federal funds only account for around 8% of public school funding. So by your logic your employer should get to tell you what to eat, right?
If you’re lying about reading the article, why would I believe that’s your wife? Even if it is, it’s kind of sad you post her pic in a politics forum as some sort of gotcha, particularly when it has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

Here, I'll use this as an example:
Nov 7, 2024, 2:12 PM
|
|
This entire issue, though, is really about the proper role of the federal government. While Michelle Obama is pushing for rigid federal control of school meals, the alternative is respecting parents who know their children’s needs better than anyone else, even better than Michelle Obama. The alternative also includes respecting local school officials, who know their communities better than the federal government.
If parents don’t like meal standards, they can and will complain directly and in person to local officials. Parents don’t have the same recourse with faceless and nameless bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
If it's up to states and localities...what happens? Spoiler alert: fuckall nothing, because nobody wants to spend money to make the changes. Now, where is RFK operating from (potentially, assuming this becomes an actual initiative)? The federal level. Not necessarily for funding, although that would help, but for standards. Same thing Michelle Obama did, and it got blown up as a failure. Why is RFK going to be successful? What will he do differently?
For starters, he'd probably have most of the opposite party on board, because it's a good cause with a good outcome if it's successful. It was a good cause and could have had a good outcome 12 years ago, too, but the directive in the Republican party was to oppose literally EVERYTHING the Democrats and Obama put forth. That was a stated policy, you'll recall. Still is.

That's where I fundamentally disagree with you
Nov 7, 2024, 2:25 PM
[ in reply to Here, I'll use this as an example: ] |
|
It should be handled at a local level, federal government does not possess the flexibility to manage such a big program like this. It NEVER works out as intended. Best I can tell, they changed the standards and told everyone to get with the program without any sort of follow through to make it work. That's pretty typical for federal government.
Localities are much more in tune with their communities, and the community also has mechanisms to force them to get it right. I don't know what RFK will do to get it right, but it's pretty obvious that it wasn't political sabotage that caused Michelle Obama's program to fail. It was poor implementation. Which again, is expected when you just try to hand wave something into existence via federal mandate.
Sure, it was a good cause, but it demonstrably did not have a good outcome. Trying it a little bit longer wouldn't have changed that.

Have you tried school lunches since Obama?
I’m assuming you’re around my age, and although pizza isn’t the healthiest thing, back in my day school pizza was actually pretty good.
I’ve since eaten school lunches with my boys on several occasions, it is absolutely nothing like it was when I was in school. I can totally see why the food is wasted.
#### cardboard pizza they serve kids now. It may be healthier but they’re not eating it.

I would think everyone regardless of party would applaud an attempt to make kids healthier. One thing I’m assuming he will preach at some point is exercise. You have to move. Put the remote down and go do the exercise of your choice. A funny thing happens when you commit to exercise. Most people begin to desire healthier foods overall. At least that’s how it works for me and people I know. Maybe it’s because the last thing I want to do after a 6 mile run is go eat a bag of Doritos and put junk calories back in. Anyway I applaud his effort. Maybe he can influence and help some people.

Well sure if more kids live that drives up the average life expectancy statistically. But once we reach adulthood there’s no question sedentary life style, poor diet, etc decreases an individuals life expectancy or at minimum his quality of life. Quality of life is the big thing for me. I’m 60 so I’m going to get old, eventually sick, and die. But I don’t want to spend my senior years in the doctors office or hospital if I can avoid it.
