Just the other day I kind of underestimated Caleb Love in this matchup
He is definitely that guy
With a potential UNC matchup, being his former team and having bad blood with them, he has that much more motivation. He’s a guy that definitely can and will take over scoring.
What I see in this game is for Clemson to get off to a hot start, until Caleb Love is told to control the game fully.
There are shots that he will make that will be unguardable. There’s not much we can do about some points he gets.
I truly don’t think he gets under 20 points. He likely gets 30.
How to counter this; PJ has a 20+ point game, and a role player has an outlier game.
Role player meaning maybe Godfrey, Jack Clark, Chauncey Wiggins, or someone like that has a big game.
PJ will be guarded by Keshod Johnson. He’s a star too. He’s going to be very aggressive and try to put PJ in foul trouble. There’s no other answer to this besides PJ just playing good clean defense.
What I am afraid of with PJ is his physicality. There’s been times recently where he just couldn’t back down another guy, or use his strength fully. Which he has a lot of.
PJ (and Ian) have to be strong and aggressive.

Just curious, why do you say Love has bad blood with UNC? Not trying to argue, just interested in your thoughts.

Lot of rumors last year that a player on UNC was hooking up with Loves girlfriend. This caused the team to split down the middle after a fight about it.

I actually did hear that rumor too but who knows if it’s true. I do know one thing. Last years UNC team was a very good team that sucked all year so there may be something to it. It’s very interesting that when RJ Davis and Love split up they both became conference player of the year. If the rift was between RJ and Caleb that would make for an interesting matchup if those 2 meet in the tournament. But I’m hoping Clemson ends Arizona’s season

If they let them play a little bit or do they have a quick whistle.
PJ will find foul trouble if it can be found so let us hope the refs let the guys play and not take over the game!!

Seems like PJ's troubles haven't been because he's trying to be physical. It's when he tries to do too much - cover a lot of ground to try to block a guard driving for a layup, strip the ball from a driving player, go over the back trying to get a rebound, things like that. If he can control the impulse to try to make the spectacular defensive play it would help, although it's such a fine line because you still want him to play aggressively.

Good assessment. One of the other keys with PJ is how the officials call the bully ball in the post. If the calls go against us when our post players try to push their defenders back, we are in trouble early. In the NCAA, the usual pattern is to let them play so I hope that is the case. Arizona is just a huge team and that means our 3 point shots have to fall. We have a chance if we have a great game.

The best thing that could happen tonight would be for Caleb Love to have UNC in his head, be looking towards the next game, and have a bad night. He has not been shooting the ball well lately.

Yeah, that immediately jumped out. Could be a big psychological advantage for us if he's licking his chops to play UNC. I like our chances even more now.

I would like to see Girard keep our guys in this matchup with his perimeter game. Early on he was almost unstoppable but opposing coaches caught on to his 3 point skills. If he can get 20 plus the good guys will be in it all the way. Hall really needs to play 30 minutes too, Schieffelin will do his part. He’s a tough dude!

I just read some comments Caleb Love made about UNC. He says he and RJ Davis still talk and pull for each other. Do it doesn’t sound like their relationship was a problem. Love basically said the fan base was very critical of him and it got in his head. The fans were pretty rough on him. I swear every school has the “buy a tee shirt at Wal Mart fans” that come out negative thinking they should have a voice rather than just be a fan.

Hopefully we'll do better this time.
Another small tidbit...he got his points against NCSU last year in both matchups...Jack Clark played in the one that N.C. State won, but did not play in the matchup that UNC & Love won.
