We're all GREATLY underestimating Brownell

It's really amazing what this guy has pulled off!
*His teams have almost zero real success in the ACC Tournament. *With the exception of one season, he has had zero real success in the NCAA Tourney. *Oh yeah, he rarely even makes the tourney *Each season he magically convinces everyone in power that he should have more time. *AND more money *And he's ridden this horse for going on 14 years.
Can you imagine anyone else at any real business having this kind of underperformance, yet getting a good raise regularly?
I think Brownell is absolutely the most amazing magician in Clemson history.
Rarely has anyone anywhere been so successful at gaslighting. Give the man his due!

Brad owes Gabe Devoe a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Dude got red hot in The Tournament. Thought Hunter Tyson, in year 6, might be that guy this year, but, alas, I was wrong.

Dude has been here nearly as long as Dabo has. Let that sink in.

They're pretty much mirror images, right?
Sigh.

SGA, maybe you’ve been around as long as I have since you’re a 1999 Tigerneter? In any case, I have been watching and attending Clemson basketball ( and other sports) since Bobby Roberts’ days. Was a student during Tates Locke’s time. bill Foster, Cliff Ellis, Rick Barnes, Larry Shyatt, Oliver Parnell, now Brad Brownell. You probably know that they’ve all been about the same from a winning percentage standpoint. Roberts, Locke, and Shyatt were below 500 and Barnes and Parnell were above 600. Foster, Ellis, and Brownell are about the same. Actually, Brownell has the highest conference winning percentage of all of them. Granted, there are more easy conference teams now than there were before. So, a little spike there with Barnes and Parnell, but we’ve basically seen 60 years of what we are seeing now. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t expect more, and I’m not at all on the Brownell band wagon. I’m just saying that this is who we’ve been for at least 60 years, so let’s not kid ourselves. Unless we have a home run hire in our pocket, I don’t think we should make a change just to keep doing what we have been doing. What name coach would come to Clemson?

Basketball is actually my first love, though I love my Football Tigers, of course.
I haven't been around as long as you, but I was in the house the day we beat the Danny Ferry Duke team in Littlejohn and for the regular season ACC championship. I was there for Horace, Elden, Dale, etc. That was a nice little run.
But as you rightly point out, nothing ultimately came from it.
I 100% agree that this is who we are.
The only question is: do we want to stay this way?
I'll never forget the press conference introducing Dabo when they asked him words to the effect of what he was going to do that the bluebloods do, to make us like them.
His answer summed up the difference: I don't want to be like them. I want them to want to be like us. We all chuckled skeptically. Then he proved virtually everyone wrong.
That's what Brownell's supporters don't get: all the money, facilities, and support staff can't buy leadership and vision. Brownell has neither.
But as to your question about who would we get? It's a great question. My point is not simply the "who", but the why/what. I remember when Hatfield and Tommy West were hired. It was sort of "throw it against the wall and see what sticks." It didn't.
Guys like Dabo are virtually unheard of. They are rare pink diamonds. But my point is: why think small? Why settle? Why act like we're not a national brand with deep pockets and the power to get any number of great coaches? Why not look for a diamond?
I'm so grateful that Dabo didn't think small. I'm not sure about Neff yet.
They're out there. There aren't many. That's Neff's job: go find the diamond. But don't keep settling for fools gold.
I know Ritchey at Furman is the name-of-the-week. Who knows? I've seen a lot of those come and go. I'm sure you have too. I remember when many in our fan base wanted to hire Kevin Sumlin or Will Muschamp. The crowd is often wrong.
So I don't know if Ritchey would be a good fit. I do know for a fact that he is a man of integrity who runs his program a lot like Dabo: hard work & love. I know he is a man of faith. Of course none of that means he is a good long-term coach. He may be a one hit wonder.
I just know this about Brownell: if you put sour milk back in the refrigerator it won't become fresher. Don't hire Tommy West, but be willing to take a chance on a no-name insurance salesman, perhaps.
I'm just all about leadership. It's everything. There have to be better leaders than Brownell. And Clemson deserves better.
