Andrea Adelson/ACC (Important for Clemson specifically)
Dec 29, 2022, 4:47 PM
|
|
Adelson, ESPN sports writer, explained to Paul Finebaum on his show today that after multiple discussions with Athletic Directors, there is simply nothing that can be done about the structure and grant of rights of the ACC right for likely the next 10 years.
For the schools like Clemson, FSU, and Miami, it has been mentioned that the ACC could prioritize its revenue to the power houses mentioned and give them better financial advantages to compete nationally with the SEC and BIG10.
For an ACC school to leave, it’d have to give up television revenue (about $40,000,000), exit fee ($200,000,000), and forfeit all scheduled home games in all sports.
I fully believe we need to be in the SEC, it’s where we belong. It’s worth it and would take us to the next level with appealing competition, recruiting, television revenue. I am not an SEC “fan”, I just believe it would be best for Clemson.

and FSU. Duke, UNC, NCS, Wake and Cuse all together barely have the viewership that FSU or Clemson has. Miami has been a charity case along with them and is probably the one school that needs to remain in the ACC.

Not sure the ACC has the power to make institutions forfeit NCAA games.

Yes correct, but the issue is not ability to leave if we want, it’s the total fee for exiting.
1) Exit Fee: ~$100,000,000-$200,000,000 2) TV Revenue: ~$400,000,000 ($40 million each year through 2036)
1st sentence of Miscellaneous Section in ACC Grant of Rights: “This agreement may not be modified or amended other than by an agreement in writing signed by duly authorized representatives of the Conference and each of the Member Institutions that are then members of the Conference”.
Options for ACC Exit
1) Leave the ACC and it’s grant of rights behind - Not likely, puts us at less value without media revenue
2) Sue ACC to get rights back - Not likely, too expensive and risk of losing case
3) Negotiate to a lower exit fee - Most likely IMO - Would need consent from ACC officials and all other teams in ACC
4) ACC Completely dissolves - This would erase all problems - Majority of teams would have to want to leave

I agree that contracts can be broken, but with the gigantic amounts of money involved, we should also expect SC State Legislators get involved. I can't imagine that the officials in Columbia will sit by idly over the fate of half a billion dollars.

"It's worth it". It's worth $600M ($40M/yr X 10 yrs + $200M) that we don't have?

Once again Swofford is the gift that keeps on pushing the knife in Clemson’s back even though he is gone. There was NO reason to lock the ACC into such a long contract. So glad that SOB is gone. He never did anything for Clemson but take credit on the stage when we won National Championships. Ridiculous.

From a competitive standpoint, the new playoff system
Dec 29, 2022, 5:00 PM
|

Does not support us moving. I don't pretend to be smart enough to weigh in on all the financial items....and most on Tnet are not either yet they will o-pine I am sure.
From an on the field standpoint, the expanded playoff guarantees entry into the playoff by winning your conference. This year, we would have been the #3 seed and received a first round bye. And this was a "down" year for us....at least in as compared to post 2015.
Do we want that automatic bid based on us being better than FSU and UNC....or if we go to the SEC being better in regular season than UGA and BAMA and LSU?
Considering that....ACC is just fine for us as long as we can keep a hold of the conference.
Competing against other conferences becomes MUCH LESS significant in the new system. You don't have to compare resumes. You simply win your conference, you are in and then go see if you can match up in playoffs.
Seems to me staying put might be best option.
As a side note....I think Transfer Portal will be a net gain win for the ACC and it would not stun me if FSU, Miami, VT, UNC become consistent Top 20 teams down the road.

This is what I’ve come to accept and be content with. The reason the 12-team playoff was put in was to give the whole CFB landscape a chance every year.
But the thing is I don’t know how long Clemson will be able to realistically compete financially with the other big programs and keep winning national championships (Which is what the standard is here). The SEC would give us that dominant consistency.

I look for the conference champ 1st round bye to disappear.

IMO (based on nothing) I think putting he conference champs as 1st-4th seeds was included to get all the conferences to agree to the 12-team expansion.
Now that it's going to happen, I expect there to be an uproar once a 9-3 conference champ replaces a previously undefeated conference runner up as one of the top 4 seeds.
ESPN/SEC/B1G now have the set up they want, and I expect they'll manipulate it to their advantage once it starts up.

I think this depends on the first 5 or so years of the 12-team playoff. If upsets begin to happen more often, like 12 seed upsetting 5 seed, then I don’t know if it changes. But if the main teams are still consistently dominating the national championship game, it could go the way you explained. I think we don’t move anywhere until that situation presents itself.

Grant of rights was signed in 2013 and again in 2016. Was during prime Clemson dominance and maybe expected to stay that way. This sport was drastically perceived differently by Clemson in 2016. NIL hit, transfer portal more prominent, conference realignment, etc. Simply put, nobody in the ACC saw any of this coming when they signed in 2016.

That's why you don't sign a contract like this for 18+ years!
And I don't see the Big Ten or SEC agreeing to anything like this.

There is also a clause in there that voids the GOR contract if 25% of the teams leave. That would only require us, FSU, Miami and 1 or 2 other schools. This is what I believe will eventually happen- those schools threaten to do just that and either A) goes through with it or B) the conference and ESPN renegotiate a better deal. It will never go the life of the deal and I don’t think it goes 2 more years.

So what would a better deal with ESPN look like? Increased percentage of viewership money? I don’t believe that the media rights of the ACC have much to do with the performance/recruiting of the ACC.
Maybe just a shorter contract would benefit.

This grant of rights was signed in 2013 and then again in 2016 and not again since 2016. Maryland left in 2014 and forfeited $31 million to leave the ACC and joined the BIG10 who offered more money. This was because they were going broke in athletics because of some awful decisions.
Basically it’s the same reason we would leave for the SEC or maybe BIG10, for increased revenue. Only difference is we’re not broke, nor are we as bad as they are, even back then.
