OutdoorLightElectricSocketInMasonry.Net question

Sorry Pic is crooked. Son of threw open the dumpster lid and broke the light. These round plastic fixture boxes suck and they get brittle. Must have been a bad batch from China back in 2011, who knows. I've replaced like 8 of these inside where the electrical box has to be replaced in sheetrock.

This is masonry however and the plastic piece of crap has to be replaced. Do they make a deeper socket to go behind masonry like the ones I've used with plaster b4?

Trying to avoid an electrician. Tia

I'm ok with most of it. I do have issues pulling wire and with fuse boxes

But basically all outlets, GFCI, switches, light fixtures, ceiling fans, etc I'm ok with. The double pole switches can get confusing, but not too bad once you figure them out.

Take down old light

Put up new light

Put milk in freezer

Turn switch on

Let there be light

Works the same for ceiling fans

Or you can hang a solar motion sensor light - no wires

I have become quite proficient at replacing interior fixture boxes with replacements from Lowes, etc. But this is the SAME box, but in masonry.

In sheetrock inside, these boxes are usually nailed into stud as they were installed when built. You can buy replacement boxes though that have flanges that you can screw in that lock behind the sheetrock and hold the new box firmly in place. You can't hang a ceiling fan from one, BUT you can hang most standard 3-5lb light fixtures fine. Just pull out the old brittle box (usually easy with some needle nose pliers), then get a hammer and bend the existing anchor nails out of the way, put in the new box and it works fine.

I pulled the old fixture off and kept the other 2 lights on the circuit working by keeping the existing connection, and just covered the hole with some Gorilla tape for now.

In the pic you can see where the fixture fell because the screw hole in the electric box BROKE, because it's brittle and a piece of crap. So the entire blue circular box has to be replaced.

Well, yeah. But how does one replace this?

That's my question. Trying to avoid a $200+ electrician visit. I've fixed this many times on interior boxes that broke from light fixtures. It's the masonry part that's a PITA. I replaced a dryer vent through masonry once, and it sucked. I've heard you can use spray foam to mount/lock it in, then grout the masonry back and it will hold. But not sure. I'm not even sure how this one is anchored. Is it just locked in the masonry? Is it mailed somehow to a stud? Guess I can figure that out, but the next step is my question.

My guess how they built the house.

Put studs up, sheathed the house, put house wrap up, the put the brick facia on with tie anchors.

My guess is, if you broke the plastic box out, you would see the house wrapped aheathing behind the box. At that point, you could just mount the metal box to the sheathing with 3/4 to 1" long, fully threaded screws.

If not, you may could try to drill into the brick at an angle with a hammer drill through the box. Then use a tapcon screw to secure the box to the brick... or, just use masonry glue to glue it to the brick. (Some sort of PL glue you can easily find at Lowes).

Note... i am not a GC... i have added a basemebt to my house, flipped a house, remodeled 2 rentals... and currently remodelling the master bath in one of the rentals.

rip the one that you have out and take it to an electrical supply house or home depot and find a metal one that is the same size.

I'd cut/pry/pull out the broken box the best I could, then get a new one and epoxy it in the existing "hole" with JB Weld or something like that.

Home Depot has "tough" boxes made out of fiberglass infused plastic. Something like this:

Epoxy may be easier than messing with grout or worse.
