Some are suggesting that Caleb Williams not play anymore.

Heisman chances slim, and he's already won one anyway.
No chance for national championship.
Has plenty of money from NIL deals.
Will remain the favorite to be first pick in draft.

So, why risk injury playing in meaningless games?

Got me to thinking. If he decided not to play anymore, would that change the way I think about using the portal to bring in "mercenaries"?

What about the people funding his NIL? I guess they have contracts which protect them if a player decides to quit 🤷‍♂️

Nissan has already cut the commercials.

So, that probably won't affect him.

I have no idea about the others. I don't understand how "collectives" work in the first place. And, I have no idea if he is getting money from a collective.

But, at any rate, you ask a good question.

I would expect if he's "injured" than he would still get paid.

Seems like it would be very easy to be "injured" and have a lingering issue that makes you unable to play.

Happens all the time for bowl games...

i would like to see ex professionals allowed to play, increase the amount of available talent, reduce the cost/mercenary

some would play for free, maybe tebow

Intentionally or not. You have the solution

If CFB is to be a business. Make it a business.
Too bad if HS kids don’t get free college.
If compensation is required universities should be able to hire the most qualified workers that are market available.

Didnt he say he made more in NIL than a rookie contract would pay?

1

Oct 24, 2023, 8:09 PM

Seems his NIL will decide if he plays.

they are going to have to put in a stipulation somehow you have to play in all the games including bowl if you accept NIL money.

you are free to stop playing football or any other job activity at anytime you like, but when you have taken money for said activity/job you can't just use the "muh future muh health" routine. the NBA is already cutting down on the ficticious injury sitting games out thing.

If you were to pay someone to remodel your house and paid him half upfront and he called and said he has to think of his future or he has to think of his health, thats fine...just but sure to refund the money immediately and you can sit inside your room and think of your future and your health all day everyday for all i care.........not sure what makes these college athletes think this entire college structure is "free" no people pay for the stadium, the foundation of college football itself is very deep it involves fans, the school itself......they are all giving you that platform for free via scholarship, you received the scholarship for one thing and one thing only, to play football, not to think of your future........playing is your future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It depends on the contract.

1

Oct 24, 2023, 8:27 PM

I have no idea about his contracts. I suspect many of them are set up on monthly payments with the stipulation if you leave school or quit the team your payments stop.

But, I have no knowledge of any of that.

Caleb probably has plenty of money already, and he may decide the money he would lose by quitting now is worth losing versus the risk of injury.

This is, sadly, the future of sports. I have never been a Pro football fan. I preferred the college level. When the players played for their education and love of the game. Now, college sports are just another level of pro sports.

I guess I will need to start supporting little league so I can be connected with amateur sports again.

Hope the "New" way of thinking people are proud of what they have brought out.

A talking head suggested this. Who gives a care?

1

Oct 24, 2023, 8:52 PM

Until someone from Caleb Williams' camp makes a comment, it's complete nonsense.

Talking heads say a bunch of stupid stuff all the time. The fact this suggestion is being tagged on Caleb Williams is misleading garbage. It should be tagged on to the person who said it.

USC is going to lose 2-3 of their last 4 games. Regardless, I would be surprised if he didn't finish the season. Not only would it permanently damage his own reputation, it would chop the legs out from under Lincoln Riley if he quit early.

Emmanuel Acho who played at Texas, lives in Dallas, and has absolutely nothing

Oct 24, 2023, 8:59 PM

To do with USC or Williams tweets his opinion that he should sit and now it’s fact. Social media sucks; leave Williams alone.

Emmanuel Acho is unlistenable for me. Cannot stand him

Oct 24, 2023, 9:12 PM

Seriously. He is TERRIBLE! The guy is a self-promoting buffoon even compared to other sports talking heads.

When idiots like him say off-the-wall stuff to draw attention to themselves, we should NOT reward the behavior. He has accomplished his mission and is probably patting himself on the back for creating a (false) narrative.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds about like how the Clemson to B1G or SEC #### started

Some ####### like that Swain dude gives an opinion and the next thing you know - everyone is standing by their computers waiting for an invitstion.

So, that's why Lincoln Riley has been out...

There was a report on 247 sports recently that he may be back in 2024.

The guys I hate this new college football for

Oct 25, 2023, 2:31 PM

Are the kids that bust their A$$ every day and live and breathe loving the schools they play for and realistically don’t have a chance at a career in the nfl … that orange bowl / sugar bowl is one of the biggest memories they will have …maybe most players mindsets have changed but I know this would not sit well with me or any team mates I played with in high school or college. Something needs to change and i get the “business” side of it but that is where we are which sucks… you never saw guys sitting out 6-7 years or previously in bowl games. There was just more of a competitive emotion attached to playing with your guys and it not being all about you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He should paint his nails and sit out

Oct 25, 2023, 3:03 PM

but seriously, a team will be taking a gamble with him because the NFL does not have cupcakes. He may turn out ok, but risky.

Outside of Denver & Carolina, it truly is "any given Sunday".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

this is why the playoff expanding to 12 is a good thing

Oct 25, 2023, 3:10 PM

because there will be way fewer "meaningless" games.

I don't like that suggestion anyway. That any game that is not about the playoff is meaningless

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Considering teams with losing records play in bowls now

Oct 25, 2023, 3:59 PM

Yea, there are meaningless games.
