I'd be willing to bet that a large majority of people

who think the portal is a good thing are younger generations that were given participation trophies and playing time because their Daddy was the coach.
It is simply a way for guys that don't want competition or to wait their "turn" to abandon their commitments. Nothing more, nothing less. They know when they are recruited who is in front of and behind them. It's not like they should be surprised when they aren't playing as much as they think they should be.
Just another way for society and athletics to coddle these soft-ass generations coming up...
And before any more grandpa comments, I'm not that old, I was just taught the meaning of earning something and not quitting something I had started. Some of you should try it.

I am old. But when I was young and whiny teenager in the 60's, my dad, God rest his soul, would calmly listen about 30 seconds, then calmly say "CC, go into the bathroom, go to the medicine cabinet, " and then he'd ask "what do you see? " took about 2 or 3 times asking him what he meant. He'd tell me "look in the mirror girl"
I finally caught on and it's served me well in life.

The world now needs instant gratification, everything has to be given not earned. Plus parents these days coddle their kids to the point that the first sign of adversity their reaction is to bolt or cry about it. Plus can’t really expect anything else when the victim hood mentality is now a sign of virtue, I’m only 28 and can’t hang around people my age they are all insane.

Why do you expect a kid to honor a committment when

the school doesn't have to? You do know that schollies are only guaranteed for 1 year right?
Do you think coaches ever tell a kid one thing during recruiting, then don't deliver on it?
How does a recruit know "who is behind them" when they are recruited? You think Klubnik knows who Clemson will sign in 2025?
Good grief. You're just spouting off bullshat. Has nothing to do with participation trophies and dad coaches.
Have you never quit a job?

Well here is a (partial) solution to the Transfer Portal conundrum.
Offer two types of Scholarships to HS athletes:
A Four-Year Full Ride. The school and the player both to commit for 4 years. No Cuts / No Transfers. This won't be attractive to the Elites, the 5-Star kids, but many of the low 4 and high 3 kids will jump at it.
The other is a One-Year commitment by both the School and the Athlete mutually renewable at the end of each year.
This would help schools manage the second-string and the depth of the roster while allowing some movement for those were either unsure of their original "commitment", or who find circumstances to be not what they expected (i.e. - don't like competition for playing time / don't like coaches disciplining them).

You Simply cannot lump all young people together that way. I have been employing Clemson interns in my business for the last decade, Everyone of them has been bright, hard-working and eager to make a difference. They have vastly superior computer skills to the older people in the office, come up with great time saving methods, and learn so fast it blows my mind. They can work circles around a couple of the “older” people I have employed over the years. Are some young people lazy entitled spoiled brats,? yes, there were plenty of them around me when I was growing up, and I recall my dad saying the same thing about some of the snobby country club kids he grew up near.
Do I like the portal, not really. But at the same time I’m not a young athlete who has one shot to make it as a pro, and if I were, I would take every opportunity afforded to me to make it. Especially if I’m sitting the bench and getting no exposure whatsoever

Well, it’s not going away, so everyone, especially Dabo, is going to have to learn to live with it and adapt to it. At least it’s not as bad as basketball……yet.

Be left behind.
Coaches leave schools, kids should have the same ability.
Plus, with NIL contracts, a kid has to play to get paid.
The only solution is for schools to draft contracts with each kid that outlines exactly what actions will allow a kid to transfer.
It all sucks and isn’t good for the kids, because we all made bad decisions when we were younger, but the instant society will not allow them time to mature, so there is no use fighting it…

These coaches promise recruits the world, get them to commit, and then bail for a better job at another school the next season. Now Athletes can do the same.

How about if a coach leaves for another job he has to sit out a year?
QB coach OC or HC. All of them.
I taught my two teenage sons to go there own way. No one coming to save you. You have to take it
So if my son played D1 and thought it was smart to leave.
I'd say go grab it and don't look back.

Honestly what’s the point in recruiting high schoolers anyway. Just have a junior-senior laden team that is physically more mature than others and roll in a new batch every year. Learning a system is highly overrated, am I right? At least for half the schools that will lose half their coaches every 2 years and be starting over.

I think you nailed it. Portal recruiting is just as important. Also recruiting your players to stay. You ll have to make some investment to keep current players happy. I know that sounds crazy. We already do so much for them .
But a 3 year portal guy is better than a guy right out of high school. Just more reps and stronger.
