Not much training needed. Just get in range and a 50 cal would do the trick. ?

Probably wanted to maintain max reasonable distancing for the safety of the plane and pilot. While they thought it was just a spy balloon, they probably wanted to ensure there were no toxic fumes, gases, etc. Oh, no one at the Pentagon told the Trump admin abt the minor balloon incursions that occurred back then, per the comments oof his staff. (I guess the Pentagon decided it was better if Trump did not know...)

think it would have been leaked by some deep state Vindman type so the press could have beaten Trump over the head with it at the time. They’ve just waited until now? Stuck it in their pocket knowing this day would come?
Because the White House and the Pentagon (and the rest of the US Government) was filled with rat f’ers looking for their chance to bring yet another impeachment over anything.
Besides, it’s not like the Biden/Harris administration isn’t constantly lying either. I fully expect a letter signed by 17 intelligence agencies all saying this really happened, just like when they said the Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian Disinformation. You can trust those guys.

It is filled with helium not hydrogen. Holes would cause a slow leak. Actually once Canada fired on one and did little damage, plus it is said a stationary balloon is kinda hard for a jet to hit, but guess they could have used a copter.
I guess the real reason is a missile is a lot more fun. I served in 2nd USA Missile Detachment, so I am biased,

The Canadians shot a 1000 rounds into one and the helium just slowly came down. They needed to make sure it went down quick so it would be in the 12 mile zone.

Don't be so clueless. This was a well planned intrusion by China. This harmless weather balloon just by chance happened to slowly pass over some of our most critical and sensitive bases. It managed to photograph all of our installations at low altitude, record every telemetry signal we bounced off of it and track every radar that locked on to it. All of this information was instantly encrypted and transmitted to a GSO satellite, encrypted again and sent down to China. Once in China a super computer decoded the encrypted download and it was in the hands of who it was intended for in milliseconds.
So much for Chinese Junk! BTW we sold them most of their tech and they stole the rest!

But, but, but, hey.....if we don't make more and more missiles, bombs, ammo, ships, planes, etc. ( and expend them) real American workers will be unemployed. Plus DOD budget might decrease. Military/ industrial complex at work. We can't have that.

IMHO it appeared that the instrument package was targeted not the balloon itself. Debris from that explosion then ripped open the balloon envelope and the whole thing plummeted rather quickly intt the ocean. Why the instruments were targeted raises a whole bunch of other questions doesn’t it?

Because of utter stupidity. Low calibre is the normal way to bring down a balloon. Single shots at a time and you can regulate descent. They blasted it with a missile.

If just punctured it would have still floated on out of our territorial waters before it came down plus it is in relatively shallow water. Had to bring it STRAIGHT DOWN
