THE CURRENT CLEMSON DEFENSE

After reviewing the roster, I have arrived at the conclusion that this defensive unit currently on the team must be the deepest and most talented under Head Coach Dabo Swinney. The current defense is so deep at DT that Coach Swinney has had to shift DT to DE. Not to mention that Clemson has quick and long DE who are already in the works to play DE before arriving at Clemson. Then you look at the linebacker corps, it is not only deep but violent and extremely fast. They can play sideline to sideline and get to the opposing backfield in an instant. The good news is that the linebacker unit is also athletic and can drop back in coverage whenever needed. If their football IQ matches their athleticism, then the corners and safeties can just hang out and watch the game from a comfortable position. This defense is so talented that I will boldly state that they will end up being better than the Power Rangers in the end. You heard it here first. Simply stated, if the offense can gel and play as a single unit then Clemson will have no problems going undefeated this season. I have a feeling that opposing teams will be praying that they are able to get a punt each drive instead of a turnover.

GO TIGERS!

The team to me looks stacked on offense and defense if they stay healthy.

I agree with your assessment of the defense. However, I have seen nothing out of the offense except a height/weight chart that suggests they are even at the mediocre level. Looks to be the same sub par offense that has plagued us the last few years.

I totally get your point, but the biggest factor going into this season is for the offensive line to play with a cohesive purpose. If the offensive line can bring violence at the point of attack while maintaining the proper blocking scheme, then CK will have zero issues throwing to one of the 8 ultra talented receivers on the roster. Factor in a solid run block scheme and at least three of Clemson's talented running backs will eat up the field. Last year did see some promise in the offensive line but turnover margin killed any momentum in the losses Clemson had. Ball security will still be a must, but I see the offense hitting a stride this season.

better than Power Rangers : Wilkins, Lawrence, Ferrell, Bryant ???

If they come close to that group we are in great shape. Depth will be better overall indeed.

I do think linebacker and secondary will be good this year. Not much drop-off but I love how well Nate Wiggins developed from early on struggles to shutdown corner. Hoping we have same development with all the young new guys coming into the fold.

Your enthusiasm is awesome and I agree this could be a very strong defense.

Are you ready for some Tiger football, me too!!!!

Go Tigers!!

Not sure we can call the offense elite just yet. We have to fix our OL issues, because it all starts there. Then there's the self-inflected execution problems--fumbles, dropped passes, missed blocks, ect., ect. The fact that the offense we displayed at the spring game was described as "first day install" level says something. Don't get me wrong. Hoping (praying) the "O" will get it together and be more productive. The talent is there. Time will tell. Go Tigers.

Just make chip shot fgs and eliminate the turnovers and last year is a 3 games better record. We would have lost only one game (Duke) last year if not for turnovers and I posit that could have been won without the turnovers.

I think this defense is better and the offense should be also, but like TJ said, “Prove it”

it over inside the 5 yard line and with TD's on those drives Clemson most likely wins the game.

Duke did play a strong game no doubt, but the Clemson turnovers doomed them in the first game of the year and it continued to happen with NCSU and FSU.

Thinking about last year just makes me sad and upset about how much better the season could have been with just a few less turnovers.

Replay Duke at the end of the season and I believe we win. But that wasn't the schedule. I like the way the defense is shaping up, and I have high hopes for the OL with the new coach. The Georgia game will tell us a lot, win or lose. If we lose but are competitive then there's hope. If we're blown out...

With Mafah being healthy and more experienced he has a chance with a good zone blocking scheme to be an all American RB and just destroy defenses!

I agree with your views as well. I think the defense will be magnificent this year and will give Georga more than it can handle. I've decided that Kade is like Bret Farve in that he is a gunslinger. I'm expecting that he will dazzle me with great plays and make me want to throw a shoe at the TV with his interceptions. I've got to accept that. If the receivers stay healthy, I think they will be fine. To me it comes down to how well Matt Luke can straighten out the offensive line issues. If the offensive line can open up gaps for the backs and keep Kade from getting sacked as often as last year, I think we might find ourselves watching something special this year.

I like your comparison to Brett Favre, but I more consider him to be like Drew Brees in his style.

I remember when we shifted CW to DE one year. We did it b/c of injuries at DE and I feel we did it this year with PWoo b/c we are so thin at DE this year. Yes, our DT room is deep enough to allow it, but I also think it isn't ideal that we had to move P Woo to DE.

Probably spun to him like, we did it with CW and it will demonstrate your versatility to the NFL by playing DE. But he is a DT that should be eating up two OL on every play so A gap to A gap is wide open for the LBs to make tackles.

They will be very very good though. Most excited to see the LB corps if Sammy is as good as advertised. Woodaz is an animal and Carter will be on point.

Or pick 6, fumble 6, and/or turnovers in your own red zone.

Thats what kept Clemson from being the top D in the country last season.

Agree there is tremendous talent among the sophomores and freshmen (Peter Woods, TJ Parker, Avieon Terrell, Sammy Brown, Jamal Anderson, Shelton Lewis, Khalil Barnes, and more). Page, Capehart, Burley, & Green bring it at DT. The 2017 & 2018 Defenses were among the top 3 in the country. High bar. And I hope you are right ChestyPuller0311®!

I am confident that this unit will be much better than the Power Rangers simply because of the depth. From a metrics standpoint, I feel as if though this unit can probably go down as the best ever.

I think the defense will be top 5 in the country. If the offense is improved then we have a chance to have a fun season. I think the offense will be slightly better than last season but still be aggravating at times. Overall, this will be a better team than last year.

Not a lot of proven depth at Linebacker, starters will be good. We will be relying on freshmen and redshirts to fill in the roster here, so I see that as a question mark, especially if a starter gets banged up.. We moved Peter Woods to SDE, again because of a lack of depth at the end, not a loaded rotation at a tackle. It is to be seen if Capehart goes into beast mode this year, along with the Willimas, both will need to step up. I have no idea who will win the starting jobs at Corner, but plenty to choose from... We have lots of dudes for sure, it is a talented and deep roster, especially at tackle as mentioned, but I am not going to peg this as one of our best units until I see how they are playing mid-season.,

We have to be more aggressive on defense(more blitzes for example and better at stopping the run). On paper we look great but we hear this every year and every year we have games where we lack consistency allowing big plays. Granted, the offense has been so predictable and likewise inconsistent it has put undo pressure on the defense. Everything has to show improvement and FAST to stand a fighting chance against UGA. The GA. game is not the season but it will set the tone as did Duke last year.

I agree this defensive unit with be excellent but deepest or best in the Dabo era? Not sure I would go that far but time will tell.

2018 defense

DE - Bryant, Ferrell,KJ Henry, XThomas
DT - Wilkins, Dex, Huggins, Pinckney
LB - Joseph, Simmons, Lamar, Chad Smith, Shaq Smith, Skalski
DB - Mullen, Terrell, Fields, Turner, Wallace, Muse

That group had a whole lot of talent and experience. I'd still put them ahead but like I said, we shall see.
