Grew up in Van Wych hunting birds with 2 fine pointers, Fanny & her son Skeeter. Grandma had 10 apple trees in a plot that my Dad and Uncle kept planted in lespedeza. I was about 10-12 tagging along with them when both dogs locked-down at the edge of the grove. Dad and Uncle killed 14 birds on the rise!! Thought those dogs were never gonna stop going back in. They said the covey was prolly about 40. Can MyfavOrange® or Spud top that one?

is around eighteen birds.
Most coveys I have flushed in a day is three. We did have five on the track of land where our pond is. I haven't saw a bird there going on four or five years.

Y’all are lucky. I’ve never shot quail, but grew up on doves. All I have is my dads stories of quail hunting in SC 50+ years ago. I’ve seen a bobwhite here and there but haven’t brought myself to go to one of those buy your bird quail hunts. I’m saving for a trip to NM to quail hunt out west where they still thrive so to speak.

Never hunted birds, except a little turkey hunting a few years back. Calling in a gobbler is a real rush. Grew up with a .22 rifle so we hunted squirrels and maybe a rabbit if we got lucky and walked one up. Started deer hunting as an adult and absolutely love that.

I worked on a quail preserve in my younger days. My job was to drive a jeep around in front of hunters and put pen raised birds out. The two best dogs were a pointer and a setter that worked well together. The pointer was old and stayed in close and the setter was young and roamed ahead more. I had to carry that old pointer out of the woods on her last hunt. She died a couple of weeks later. She literally hunted until she died. What a dog.

My uncle had a setter named Jake that actually died on point. As they were walking up the old boy just started slumping. Dead before they could get him back to the truck. Most of my family wouldn't hunt setters, said it took too long to get the cockleburrs off them.

My Pop took me hunting from an early age, would carry me over the briars. Later on he got me a 22. We always had a few hunting dogs. His pride was his Pointer (Toby) and his Setter (Dan). He grew up below dirt poor on a farm with 8 siblings. They had to hunt, fish, and farm to survive, so he was very good at it all. I love all dogs, now just have a cat.

Hunting wild quail, not pen raised quail is just special.
Walking in behind the dogs locked on the birds is just the best.
You guys are gonna cost me some money. Good wild quail hunting still exists in TX for sure if the rains have been good.
Gotta do it maybe next season.

The real fun is not the killing of birds, but the training of dogs.

I have never been a hunter. Took up golf and that takes time and most of my money.
My boy loves to hunt and has killed some nice bucks, but his true love is the ducks.

I miss the days I went with my dad. Those days are long gone, but was a special time. We had 3 pointers and they would really work and when they stopped you knew you were in for a treat.

Too many cats turned loose in the wild. Bob whites nest on the ground and roost there also. Easy pickings and the cats kill for fun,not to eat. It is a shame to not hear the Bob white call anymore.

Highly recommend going hunting with your son. Great bonding time. And once you shoot that first buck you’ll be hooked and might even sell those golf clubs.

Years ago we were trying to cut over from Lancaster to get to Carowinds for a concert. Seemed like every crossroads had a sign: Van Wych 7 miles. We made the concert but never did figure out where Van Wych actually was!

can't even match it. when I was young my father took me quail hunting. I remember the coveys, the sound as they got up and what a treat it was to enjoy fried quail.
By the time I got to high school, there were no more coveys. My father did what he could to make the place more hospitable to quail
I still go out to that farm sometimes, might shoot skeet, targets or even dove, but the quail seem to be long gone.
