Can DJ become Clemson’s best-ever QB?

Would 2 Nattys do it?
Some expected him to have a chance to accomplish this feat last year and this year. Well, another growth year later and here we are with the same opportunity.
Disclaimer: I came back from Boston with COVID, so I may not be thinking clearly. Or maybe I’m thinking MORE clearly.

Depends on your definition but if we win this year, DJU is off to the NFL.

Agree, no. This kinda turned into whether he gets drafted or not. But to your point, if he won the natty this year, I agree with most others, he will have transformed into at least a 3rd round draftable QB.
Even with all that, Trevor was 38-2 with a natty, loss in championship game, and loss in playoffs. DJ is 17-4 as a starter currently. He can never get those 4 losses in regular season games back and hence never be the best QB at Clemson. He's yet to beat a top notch team.
Honestly, I'd be ecstatic if we even made it to the championship game.

If we win the natty or even if DJ has a strong showing in the playoffs he'll be off to the NFL and I don't blame him. When DJ is playing at his best he can be compared to Ben Roethlisberger (the good Ben Roethlisberger that was winning super bowls) a really strong arm and can be difficult to bring down if you don't get a clean hit.

He'd have to throw up some truly gawdy numbers quickly to get that status. Deshaun and Trevor were great from the start and put out insane stats by years end. Heck Deshaun almost won 2 Heisman trophies and should've won the 2016 Heisman and arguably the 2015 one. So I'll go out on a limb and say he wouldn't be the greatest but he could put himself on the Mt. Rushmore of Clemson QB's if he keeps improving.

I am sorry Covid has had this effect on your brain. Just kidding!! He is no place close to being the best ever. He is having a productive year. Still looks weird with his footwork.

with outstanding performances, then we'll talk. I would have to say yes.
BECAUSE, in the playoffs, it takes outstanding performances from the QB.
An average QB will get us to and win the ACCCG. An above average QB will win a 1rst round Playoff. An outstanding QB will win it all.
To win 2 in a row, well that is above special.

No. He was terrible last year and while has made great improvements from last year, he is only pretty good this year. He can’t hold a candle to Tajh Boyd much less Watson or Lawrence.

Someone at CBS (when did they become draft experts) has been smoking a heavy dose of hopeium. A GM could virtually end his career by taking DJ with their first pick. At times he is good. At other times his accuracy evaporates and his footwork is horrific. Can you imagine the "bad" DJ in an NFL game? Ever been to an NFL game? Simply stated, the speed of the game is a step change from college. It's one, two, three, and the ball has to be out. You have to go through 3-4 progressions in that time and deliver it into a very small window. I thought Trevor walked on water. He is struggling with the transition and he has one of the quickest releases in the NFL. DJ is a mid round project IMO. I think his chances of ever starting in the NFL are near zero from what I have observed.

1. Compliments to DJ for outstanding 2022 improvement. He is vastly outperforming my expectations. 2. He is closing in on Tajh IMHO as #3 or #4. 3. More work to do in 2022. Can DJ continue improvement curve in upcoming bigger games. Let's hope so!

Just a little reality check:
1. DJU will NEVER be the best QB from Clemson.
2. DJU cannot take us to the Natty this year - The CFP is possible, the Natty is not.
3. DJU is 50/50 to be the starting QB next year (if he stays)
4. DJU will get a chance to be an NFL QB, but he will not be a particularly good one.
I will be happy to be proven wrong on any or all of these predictions, but if I had to bet real money, I would go with them.

Lots of great comments and arguments from everyone.
For the reason I hold Homer Jordan ahead of Steve Fuller and others, I would have to insert DJ in my top 4 with a Natty this year. Matters not what his stats are compared to the rest. And a second run at it could lift him higher; another win would be case closed.
Like Homer, we stole DJ from a local (albeit dormant) local powerhouse program - from across the country no less. And also like Homer he had to wait his turn.
Unlike Homer, he arrived with big expectations and an NIL deal soon followed.
Part of the calculus, to me, has to be the way he's overcome the distractions of the money and hype, his injury and weight, and perhaps mostly his family issues from last year. Then substitute the on-field variables of blocking, receiving, play calling…
His footwork still causes me stress, but his reads and decision making are greatly improved, and his arm talent is up there with TB. Receivers are improving. Play calling?
It’s all fun to think about while we’re winning. DJ has a chance to do everything he wanted when he decided to come here. Best case scenario is he leaves with some hardware and a lofty place in our hearts.
Go Tigers! Beat FSU!

Nobody has mentioned Charlie Whitehurst at all. I would rank my top QBs as follows:
1) Trevor Lawrence- Besides the slow start his second year, he consistently made great plays. Surprisingly, a really good runner. Deserved the Heisman.
2) Deshaun Watson- He is close to being tied to Trevor, but at times he seemed to make poor decisions. Both of them would have put up gaudy numbers with an above average offensive line. Also deserved a Heisman. They really need these awards after the season.
3) Charlie Whitehurst- He obviously was a great QB here, but to have a long life in the NFL as "Clipboard Jesus" speaks to his ability, even if not great enough to start. Never had the talent around him that the others had on this list.
4) Tajh Boyd- Great guy and helped propel the position that allowed us to get Watson and Lawrence. Way too often though he had "Tajh Moments" with a strange fumble or bad pass.
5) Woodrow Dantzler- Not the greatest passer and not the best talent around him, yet he was amazing to watch and always felt like he was a highlight away from changing a game.
DJ and Homer I would put down here tied for 6th. Not hating on either just with Homer it was a perfect storm season, kind of like LSU a couple years ago. Things just went right. DJ has shown he can win in average ACC conference this year. He is still greatly improved and really has not made but one bad pass for an interception. The first one of the year was a tipped pass if I recall.
Again I wish DJ the very best. I hope he can prove me wrong and win Two Heismans and go to the NFL hall of fame. Just do not seem him ever starting a game as the first string QB in the NFL at this time.

Whitehurst was awesome. Could’ve been dominant with recent Clemson teams.
Dantzler is another favorite. I felt like his offensive teammates were too comfortable watching him dominate.
At the end of the day, a QB has to manage the game and get the W, so Freshman/Sophomore TL, Sophomore/Junior DW and Junior HJ stand alone in tier 1 for me.
Interestingly, in Homer’s first year as starter, the team had a building year and went 6-5.
For me, TL is QB 1 simply based on coming in and going 29-0 (with help from KB and CB) before losing to an unconscious Joe Burrow (with only an injured Tyler Davis playing well on the D-line).
DW is a close 2; finished stronger and could’ve won 3 with a little luck and returning for a senior year.
We will all be ecstatic if DJ breaks into this space.

I agree. In fact, two in a row, along with a Heisman or two, would put him in best-ever consideration. Maybe not from a gaudy stats standpoint, but certainly as a winner.
First things first. Let’s hope he and his boys can tame the Noles and their crowd.
