Stars absolutely matter when you look at signing 20-25 guys a year over several years.

Good news. Only three programs have more 5 stars on their roster than Clemson and six have more 4 stars. Clemson also ranks 4th in team composite ranking.

Which is why this past season was so disappointing. Clearly a certain 5 star is more like a 3 star and ratings aren’t always accurate.

Thats what happens when your QB finishes the season barely rated in the top 150 in the nation. I'm surprised we won some of those games.

This is true. The real criticism of this staff should be the roster management of QBs. No excuse for not having a viable backup

(Top 5-10) without recruiting a lot of 4-stars and some 5-stars. Good teams recruit highly rated players. PERIOD. Why some people have been in such deep denial about this and have been fighting this obvious truth for so long is beyond me.

We have FOUR legacy players in one recruiting class that are all three stars including a 6'3 200 lb DE but don't point it out, because you'll hurt someone's feelings.

And yet this class is still rated higher than any class Clemson signed through 2016. Clemson played for and then won national championships with classes like these. Cry all you guys want to but there is nothing wrong with this class. Especially when considering the three major coaching losses.

Just seems like we are restricting the talent pool to former players and their families with coaching and recruiting now.
This might be a winning strategy but only time will tell.

History tells us Dabo knows what he's doing. Until he proves otherwise we have to assume that. Without the four decommits this class is right there with the best classes Clemson has signed. Losing three major coaches would decimate most programs. The future is unknown at this point but no use wringing hands and making it sound worse than it is.

simply pointing out the facts: Consistent top 10 teams consistently recruit a lot of 4 and 5-star players. That is not up for debate. The star make up of this class tell us little as to whether or not Dabo knows what he's doing.

You really think Dabo and staff are consciously refusing to recruit a 5* so they can offer a legacy? It’s not an either or. We recruit 3* players every year. And for all the Tnet geniuses whining about the portal, who is more likely to be developed into a solid backup that stays with the team? A legacy or some other 3* player looking for PT somewhere else.

Recruit 4-5 stars then develop players that have good work habits and won’t be distractions. Yes, the 4-5 star recruitment took a bit of a hit this year with staff turnover, but still a very solid plan IMO.

Agree. But there are a couple of weaknesses in the star system too. One is it pretty much measures talent. That’s the most important factor, but it doesn’t measure heart, work ethic, perseverance, mental health, etc. I’m glad the author used the NFL draft as the measurement of success. I remember in the Bowden years when we didn’t have near the talent we have now. Folks kept say Tommy was not good at coaching “all of our talent”. I kept saying really? Some of those years we might get someone drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. But because they were a HS 5*, everyone thought we had much more talent than we really did when you looked at their play on the field at Clemson.

as a math teacher, I enjoy seeing "the numbers". People tend to come up with their own conclusions based on personal biases but numbers are more analyical.
He should have given this to a proper statistician but probably would have fielded the same results.
Recruiting rankings and stars aren't the end-all but an important part of the picture.

More Cool Recruiting Stats...
Jan 29, 2022, 1:09 PM
|
|
Year / Champ / Avg. Recruiting Class Ranking 4 Years Leading Up
2013 - FSU - 6.25 2014 - OSU - 4.00 2015 - Bama - 1.00 2016 - Clemson - 12.75 2017 - Bama - 1.00 2018 - Clemson - 10.75 2019 - LSU - 7.25 2020 - Bama - 2.25 2021 - UGA - 2.00
We are definitely an outlier in terms of what we are able to accomplish on the field versus the rankings of that talent coming out of high school. At the end of the day though, hitting the target at QB has outsized influence.

Also looks like contrary to the “only a cheerleader “ narrative, Dabo and his guys can coach too. Gets more with less.

so of course it makes sense that there are fewer of them drafted.
Maybe I missed something as I just skimmed the article.

Am I the only one who didn’t see the brilliance of this analysis? Yes, 5 stars matter. It’s not debatable. But it’s not the only way to win. And of course the 5 star ranking is only about athletics and not the ability of the individual to deal with life away from home and on a big stage.

the same. You are arguing against a point which the article has not attempted to make.
5-stars are much more likely to make the NFL than 4-stars, and 4-stars are much more likely to make the NFL than 3-stars, and so on. That's the whole point. There is no other point.
But it’s not the only way to win. And of course the 5 star ranking is only about athletics and not the ability of the individual to deal with life away from home and on a big stage.
Nobody is claiming it's the only way to win, and nobody is claiming star rankings can measure a recruits ability to deal with life away from home. The article merely proves that historically, 5-stars go to the NFL at a much, much higher rate than 3-Stars.
