If best is the hardest I would say Musgrove Mill. Definitely a man’s course

I haven’t played those! The best and hardest course I have played has been Man O War in Myrtle beach or the Myrtle beach national north course

Toughest couple of courses I have played on the coast was Tidewater and Glen Dornach. If you want to feel good about your game go somewhere else.
Caledonia= great course… still want to play True Blue down that way as well.

True Blue and Caledonia are both great courses. In that same area, Pawleys Plantation and the Heritage Club are really nice too. 4 great courses that are really close together.

Glen Dornach is tough. Went with a group and for some reason Glen Dornach was the 2nd 18 on the day we played it, making it more brutal.
One of the guys must have hit a dozen balls trying to clear a marsh and finally gave up. On the other side of the marsh he took his golf shoes off to look around the edge to see if he cleared it. Not a particularly good idea with the critters around. Anyway, I saw his cart partner heading back to pick him up and he was walking up the fairway wearing nothing but his "whitie tighties". He was done. The course conquered. First his money, then his clothes.

It’s a course you definitely need to play a few rounds to know what’s going on. Lot of lay up and placement shots.

I don’t think we ever played Glen Dornach in all the years we were going to MB. But your description reminds me a lot of Charleston National. I lost more golf balls on that course than any I have ever played. Everything over marsh to a small landing area then over marsh again to the green.

....best course at a state park - Hickory Knob. (At least it was in 93 when I played it.)

Sage Valley, yes the course built by the guy snubbed at Augusta across the state line.
No carts, had caddies in white jumpers like Augusta, they knew the course.
But what really did it, was not over booked. I never felt pushed/pressured to play fast. And it’s not like it took too long, waking probably took 4-4 to 4 1/2 hours.
Really, it felt like how it should be played. Relaxing and stress free.

They totally redid sunset cc in Sumter. Gregg Thompson bought sunset and total makeover. Thompson’s Company does a lot of construction for Clemson, college of Charleston Etc.

Haven't played at Kiawah but based on googling it looks like a fine course.
I used to play high school golf in the low country - I do miss playing for free! My favorite course was Dataw on Saint Helina Island near Beaufort.

Hardest course Musgrove Mill. Can’t miss a fairway or a green.
