Are there a lot of coots in Charleston?

First time traveling to Charleston with the wife and was just curious. I'm definitely going to be wearing my Clemson championship gear loud and proud. Any suggestions for what to do and want to see would be greatly appreciated.

Most of the coots have gone into hiding over the past couple years, or exchanged their Walmart gear for store credit and have pledged allegiance to the Citadel. Endless things to do here, just depends on what your looking for

So many great places to eat. We like S.N.O.B's. I do think it's worth it to take a carriage ride. There are so many gorgeous homes and streets that you can't do it all on foot. The market is pretty much tourist stuff. Hyman's Seafood is right down town and even though it's a tourist spot I've had plenty of decent meals there, particularly if you are in that area. The tourist info center is a good place to start. You could spend a month in Charleston and just get started. Lots of folks will tell you to go to Shem Creek to eat. Just typical seafood restaurants really.

Definitely start at the visitors center. You can park there and buy a ticket for the trolleys and ride all day. If you are there on a Saturday, get a paper and look for yard sales. A few people downtown will have one and it's a great way to meet people and check out the houses also.

More Tigers than coots Downtown and Mt Pleasant. Coots are mostly in West Ashley than anywhere else in the area. DO take a tour of Charleston. Bus tours leave from the visitor center. Bus tours cover much more area than a carriage tour and costs less money. Southern Accent Tours are the best www.TourChas.com Its owned by a Clemson guy and they only have tour guides from the area. There is so much history here you will be doing yourself a disservice not taking a tour. The Slave Mart Museum on Chalmers Street is very interesting as is the Confederate Museum in the City Market.
Cool places to walk are: The City Market King Street The Battery
Take a boat tour to Ft Sumter, They depart at 11:00 and 2:30 everyday. Rent bikes to explore after your tour. Charlestons residential streets are wonderful to ride a bike on. NOthing like it, period.

Coast is a really good restaurant, laid back upscale dining and you can feel comfortable wearing your Clemson gear in there. It's between John St down a quaint little alley. Have fun, chuck town is special.

game from my experience all over though. Too much mix to claim any one in particular.
I believe Clemson has an architectural school in Charleston plus the engineering school is tied into one of the major wind tunnel structures in the area. The Paw stretches far and wide, even in state.

Add Scott's and King BBQ. Spend time around Market and King Street. Nothing is cheap. Park (if you can find a place) and walk everywhere. Meeting Street Inn is a great place across from The Market.

Morgan Creek Grill IOP (isle of palms near wild dunes) best view of inter-coastal waterway featuring very good restaurant or bar food, watch the boats launch at the ramp, very entertaining. best sunset anywhere at top bar on the east coast. Or check out happy hour at the Cabana Bar at Waters Edge at Shem creek, also a nice restaurant inside. If you just want a burger and no view check out poes tavern at sullivans island (well done or its raw).... Or Shem creek bar and grill. some of the best places on the planet

I've had several people start conversations when I was wearing a Clemson shirt in Charleston. Pretty even mix of fans, it seems.
I think the best authentic Charleston restaurant is Poogan's Porch. Amazing food. It's right next door to Husk, which is very popular with tourists, but I would avoid.
If you're in Mt. Pleasant at lunchtime, for some unique and tasty twists on hot dogs, try Jack's Cosmic Dogs, right near the intersection of 17 and 41. They have homemade toppings, even the mustard. There are plenty of different dogs to choose from.
If you like coconut cake, Peninsula Grill is considered by many good critics to have the best in the world. People will stop by late just for dessert.

Unfortunately, Charleston is loaded with coots. As mentioned earlier there are hot pockets of Tigers. Mt P, DT, and James Island are the pockets of Clemson fans. Wear your colors proud and irritate as many gamecock fans as possible. It's awesome.
First off, I have to admit I'm what's called a Benyah from Charleston. As for stuff to do in Charleston... it's sucks. In the summer it's way too hot. The mosquitos are terrible. The traffic is a nightmare. The restaurants claim unreal food but it's average. The beaches suck there is no surf. Cockroaches everywhere. Don't go out in a boat. There's sandbars and hidden oyster beds that you can run into. The rivers aren't marked well at all. The fishing is horrible too. Plus, people from Ohio and the New England area have ruined it for future generations...

Restaurants are among the best in the world. Many james beard award winning chefs. All water ways and rivers are marked properly. Ships sail here from around the world. SMH on the 2 items above.
Fishing is great Temperatures are hotter in Columbia and Greenville than they are in Charleston in the summertime.
Not sure what angle the poster above is coming from. Charleston is simply a world class city.

Yes there a lot of coots. After being away from Charleston for 9 years, returning has been very disappointing. Traffic and litter in Charleston is awful. Do not get on a bicycle period.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned taking a tour of some plantations down highway 61. Middleton is my favorite. They have a carriage tour that takes you around the grounds. There's a restaurant there too and the food is really good.
Aside from that, downtown Charleston is a must as numerous ppl have already mentioned. If you have the $$$ check out Grill 225. It's my wife's favorite restaurant. We typically go there during restaurant week where the prices is more $$ than $$$. Their ribeye is amazing though.

Spend most of your time in downtown Charleston exploring the city's history.

Walk if you can. Lots of neat old homes and buildings, and great restaurants as well.
I can also recommend Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island. Really unique restaurant/bar with great food. I go every time I visit.
You'll find Clemson fans in the nicer, wealthier areas like downtown and Mount Pleasant. As you'd expect, Coots tend to congregate in North Charleston and Summerville where rents are cheaper and more blue collar jobs are to be had.

I live on James Island and grew up in lower Berkeley County . Coots are more prevelant in the LC than any other fan base ...but they are difficult to spot depending on how successful they are in any particular year . Whether it's women's basketball or baseball or football , the USuC fan will proudly display it's colors so long as there is a modicum of success that can be associated with it . They prefer the car flag and magnet to actual stickers and transfers ...because theyare so easily removable and can be reapplied when things start looking up again , however brief. Yes , the LC is truly a wonderful place to live ...just a smidge better for us Tiger fans at times such as these .

I'd guess that in an average year the Coot:Tiger ratio is between 2:1 and 3:1. It's not as bad as, say, Florence, but they're still everywhere. Although over the last 2 seasons they've been very hard to find.
As evidence, walk into any Dick's Sporting Goods in the Charleston area. There is almost no Clemson gear in sight--not even championship gear. But they have an entire section dedicated to nothing but Coot gear. I've seen this at 2 separate Dick's stores in the past 4 weeks and it's mind-boggling. Same for Target, Walmart, just about anyplace that sells college sports gear--except Palmetto Moon. They try to keep it 50/50.
Wear your championship gear as much as you can...it helps to keep them in hiding.

This group of answers might be the worst suggestions of Charleston I've seen. Yea coots are in the blue collar areas Summerville, North Charleston. James Island. On my side of the block in the city there are us, uva, auburn, osu, clemson, Carolina, auburn, citadel, citadel, sewanee, and CofC in that order. The only coots downtown, city part of west Ashley, mt p are lawyers. Anywhere near actual charleston there are no coots except alumni. Walking around downtown you will run into more buckeyes than anything because our tourist are made up of mostly of them. Never go to hymans, and skip the market.
What kind of things are you into? History, dining, beaches, shopping

Order of schools fans you will see: #1 CofC #2 citadel #3 Clemson #4 Ohio state #5 coots #6 everyone else.
100% agree to skip hymans I can think of at least 10 better seafood restaurants just off of the top of my head. I'm not a big seafood person but def skip on hymans. Don't skip the market...its a good little experience if you are not from around here. There's really nothing to do unless you are into history. If you want to go to bars then go somewhere on upper king street, stay away from touristy market area.

You are more likely to run into an Ohio State fan than a coot fan. If you stay on the peninsula and don't venture too far outside of downtown then you are likely to never see a coot. They all live in trailers on the outskirts of town (I'm being serious).

There are coots in city limits they are just law school alumni and they one don't care about football or two think they're too important chasing ambulances and getting criminals off the hook to care about football. I tell you the coot attorney is one person I strongely dislike.

alright I fibbed

OK OK I may have fibbed a little...ok a lot... EXCEPT for the coots we are the minority here. Charleston is absolutely unequivocally the best city/town in the country. The food is world class. The best steaks in town are at Hall chop house or Oak steak house. Expensive as all get out. Honestly, the seafood is average in DT. I fish for a living so I know really good seafood. I would say Amen Street Raw bar is the best for seafood in DT. As stated before Hymans seafood is nappy... The bars are a ton of fun. Depending on your age, upper king street is the place to be for the night life. If you venture to Mt P or as we call it Mt Perfect hit up Shelter or Reds good times. If you go to James Island go to Smoaky Oak restaurant it's tasty. Just don't go folly lots of tree huggers and liberals cops are rediculous. If you slip out to johns island eat lunch at Stono Market Cafe, it will be packed, only open for lunch. Like a few posters said earlier the tour thing is probably something you wanna do. Fort Sumter, carriage ride Yada yada yada. If you got some extra money to spend charter an inshore boat and go catch some spotail bass or as Yankees would say Redfish. Do not leave the city from 4:00 in the afternoon til about 7:00 in the evening. The traffic will drive you bananas. I'm serious about this. Charleston county has done nothing in infrastructure the past 20 years. You and you wife will have fun, enjoy it.
