Any updates on Gunn's kicking in practice?

I was watching the game this weekend and when Weitz missed the FG it got wonder about Gunn. I haven't heard him mentioned at all recently. Weitz has missed FGs in two straight games. I just wonder at this point why not give Gunn another shot.

I haven't heard an update, but judging by our FG percentage this season with weitz kicking it's a safe bet to assume Gunn can't be much worse . Not trying to pour on weitz because this one is more of a coaching failure to be this unprepared but dang it's so bad

Weitz misses are at least close to the goal posts.
Gunn was kicking his FG attempts into the backs of the blockers when he wasn’t duck-hooking the shot into the stands aligned at the goal line.
With luck, the last two months have been good for Gunn to improve his mechanics enough to hit his FG attempts to be within 10 yards of the outside side of the goal posts.
Maybe next year he’ll be ready to go.

True and agreed....i know he looked very bad the few times he had a chance, but I guess I was wondering the same thing as the poster. I mean, there's just no way a team as big and successful as Clemson would scout a kid, watch film and various other things they do to evaluate talent only to find out he can't kick it over his own linemen?! I just think there is some head stuff going on and hoping that it gets worked out

If his kicking accuracy is as bad as you say. Then he will not become a KICKER in one year. Development starts early in life. Not at age 20.

Fully expect Nolan Hauser to come in and win the job as a true freshman next season. Hopefully Gunn stays on for competition in practice and kickoffs. But if Hauser is as good as he sounds, he should be our kicker for the next 4 years

How many place kickers can you afford to carry on scholarship though?
I don't think the ability to kick a football through the endzone is worth a scholarship. I think you could find a few preferred walk onz that could do that.
Scholarship should go to punters and field goal kickers.

Just put the kickers that can't kick on the kickoff cover return team, let them get smacked around, and then they decide they don't like football so good anymore. Problem solved.

Here is how id think of it…
If he's hurt and you believe that he can improve when healthy, give him another year
If he's not really hurt and he just can't make field goals consistently, you have got to pull it
You just can't afford to tie up scholarships at kicker

Two things. First, that completely goes against Dabo's style, commitment, morals, and culture. So, it won't happen.
But I'll play along for a minute. If we pull his scholarship, and he leaves, who is the backup? Castner, who has never attempted a FG? Or are we hoping another grad student is hanging out somewhere waiting for a chance?
Gunn has a huge leg and was actually highly ranked out of high school. I for one hope (and think) he can develop into at least a serviceable backup kicker, if he wants to.

Hey, I don't like it either, but that's the reality we live in.
Kids on academic scholarships have to perform and keep minimum gpa’s. So not unreasonable to demand performance in athletics.
We've got a starting kicker thats 1 out of 6 for FG’s 40 yards or more.
If Gunn was a servicable backup, he would be kicking field goals again by now (unless he's got some weird injury that only let's him kickoff - but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense - does it?)
Dabo just said it's on of his top priorities to address in the spring, so I guess we will see how he plays it soon enough.
I think he signs a starter in the portal and eases in the new incoming freshman.
It doesn't sound like Dabo is in the mood to let it all ride on a true freshman and Gunn.

I agree with your last paragraph. But I don’t think that means he will pull Gunn’s scholarship.

Hopefully, when Gunn is beat out by Hauser, he will transfer to win a role as a starter with a team he can help.

A good field goal kicker usually leads the team in points. Pretty important to have a good one. Think of Catman hitting that field goal. a few plays after 4th and 16 to beat LSU

He may still be battling injuries. Last I remember was he wasn’t even practicing, just going out and kicking off during games. That was about a month ago.

A dependable field goal kicker is as valuable as any position on the team except maybe a QB. Field goals and extra points add up during the season and to not have a good kicker is damaging as we are seeing this year. They are certainly worth a scholarship.

GUNN HURT HIS LEG IN PRACTICE AND GOT INTO SOME BAD HABITS ON FG'S TRYING TO COMPENSATE. HE WILL ONLY BE DOING KO'S THE NEXT 2 GAMES.

And maybe Div. II. Who recruited them? And how did we get stuck with them? Every poor to average college team in the nation has better kickers.
