Milliken & Co., Process Engineer, Saluda, SC, 1986-1990
Once we got to Lexington, I went to work for Milliken as a process engineer. As some of you know, Milliken requires all new managers go through their Management Orientation Program (MOP). It was an 8 week program where we learned at least a little about all management areas within Milliken. We travelled to various plants all over SC, Georgia, and NC. I specifically worked for Saluda Plant, which produced polyester thread (yarn) for various cloth products. In addition to developing new yarns, I would travel to many plants to take care of problems or help in the development of new cloth products. Milliken provided me with all the management tools to have a successful career in any business. I was, and am, forever thankful to Milliken for hiring and training me at a young age. My next job move was pretty stupid, as you’ll see tomorrow. What was I thinking…???

Worked in Textile at a young age. From winding yarn onto to cones to Twisting yarn onto bobbins to looms weaving felt to heat and chemical treating felts for the paper industry. Worked asbestos product to mono-filament product. Interesting work for a short time but was glad to get away from the asbestos. Good deal on 6 days left to your best days ahead.

I really don't want anything special on my last day. I just want to tell them the same thing that I told the employees on my 1st day 27 years ago... Safety 1st, Quality 2nd, Efficiency 3rd. Everything else is secondary.
