Amen to that! I have always held my breath when the ball didn't go out of the end zone.

It ended when Bowlware got on the field. I know he wasn't alone but you could always expect him to be close to the ball.

I'm happy with what we have.

I'll take a defense that can get a three and out and an offense that can gain ten yards over super special-teams any day. PATS instead of punts and field goals.

Kicker and Punter are obvious questions, but there are 11 guys on the field on special teams plays.
I want to know if the return units can block and if the coverage units can stay in their lanes and make plays.

Not sure what you guys are really looking for. We only gave up 19.9 yards per kickoff return last year. SOMEONE was making tackles.
7th in the ACC and 42nd in the nation. While nothing compared to our defense leading the nation in total team defense, this still isnt bad. One of 41 returns (Gurley in the first game) went the distance. We most certainly can improve. Id love to find a kicker than can put the ball in the endzone 80% of the time and a punter who can knock it down inside the 15. Time will tell.

We didn't have a pure punt returner or kickoff receiver. Ray Ray and Cain are in the house. I expect one of them to handle this.

Gotta have blockers or that means nothing.
Last year the coverage was on top of Humpries and the kick returners way too fast most of the time.

Coverage was passable, but I don't think middle of the pack in the ACC is where we want to be in any category.
Return numbers were a joke. 115th in kickoff return yards at 18.76 yards per returned kick and 98th in punt return yards at 5.69 yards per return (way less if some of those Louisville players hadn't tripped).
In Football Outsiders' FEI Special teams rating, which combines Field Goal Efficiency, Punt Return Efficiency, Kickoff Return Efficiency, Kickoff Efficiency, Punt Efficiency, and Opponent Field Goal Efficiency, Clemson ranked #103 with STE of -1.118. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/feist

Special teams is where i kinda miss CJ Spiller the most

It got to the point to where teams wouldn't even kick it to us. The starting field position we'd get was crazy. Then if a team did dare to kick it to CJ he'd get us a similar field position or take it to the house.

2014/15 Clemson Punt Return - Huge Disappointment
Aug 4, 2015, 1:04 PM
|
|
Clemson punt return lineman routinely let punt team linemen get past them and Humphries (or other punt return) would make the best out of a horrible situation. When most articles talk about specialty teams/punt return team, they almost always focus on who's catching the ball. If you don't block for him, you'll end up getting him hurt or risking a turnover if he doesn't fair catch. Furthermore, it's a missed/wasted "offensive" opportunity that lengthens the field for our offense. Imagine what a boost it would be if the punt return team was top 20 nationally...it would shorten the field considerably for our offense. Humphries punt return against Louisville last year was an aberration. This is a COACHING PROBLEMthat can/should be fixed.
