At the time Clemson was running a "Bandit" defense. which is basically the ancestor of most NFL defense schemes today. It was a 4-3 that could also be a 3-4 dependent on where Pickett(the bandit DE) lined up on the play at LB or DE. He and Headen would alternate sides dependent on offensive formation and Pickett would rush, hold or drop dependent on the situation, and Headen would too, even though he was a LB. Devane and Perry normally alternated at NT, however in the Nebraska game that was changed for Nebraska's I-Formation option and both were often in the game in the one and two gaps and Pickett pulled. This created a nightmare for Rimington (he had only one holding call in the whole season) and he got three in the bowl game against Perry and Devane, both of whom were pretty dominant that night.

we played conservative and Trumpy said it was because the CU coaches thought they could not score again on our D. Which was true

Rimington was one of 2 Outland Trophiy winners on the Nebraska team. Steinkulker (sp) was the other that couldn't block Perry, Devane and Jeff Bryant. We lined up Devane and Perry in Wide Tackle 6 formation and they got through and caused a fumble. Also, the O coaches in the booth took off their headsets after the Tuttle TD. No one would score twice on our D and there was no use sending plays to the sidelines. Ford was calling the rest.

... like we we're standing still to make it a one-score game after Tuttle's TD reception.
Then we had to lean on Homer's heroics to maintain possession and salt the game away.
Maybe we we're conservative, but if Jordan doesn't make some fantastic individual plays to keep extending that last drive, l'm not at all comfortable with that 7-point cushion.
Personally, I would not have wanted to see the Husker offense back on the field with both Mike Rossier and Roger Craig.

I remember that I did not want to see the Huskers back on the field with Rosier running the ball. It seemed like he was getting 6, 7, or 8 yards a carry!

Dave was flagged two or three times for holding Wm. Perry (as others have noted), but he was actually holding him on just about every play. I'm real familiar with the Nebraska football program and have met several of the coaches and athletic directors. I am friends with several of the Nebraska All-American players during the Devany and Osborne eras. What they have done in the last decade or so hiring AD's and football coaches is NOT Nebraska "like". Bike riding tree huggers from the west coast have nothing in common with the Cornhuskers!

The story I heard. Ford and his staff studied reels and reels of film. They noticed that Remington used his hands to hold his opponent on the front of his shoulder pads. The officials were alerted to this fact and early in the game the officials detected a hold just as Ford had described. Now that his little trick was exposed, Perry and Devane had their way with Remington and he was no longer that All American center that struck fear in the heart of every opponent, especially the Tigers.
