It wasn't the three point shooting

I'm sitting there watching Notre Dame's guards just stand still dribbling 30 feet away from the basket for the umpteenth time, and my wife finally goes, "Why are they letting them do that?" Why indeed.
We let them take 20 seconds off the clock for free all night long. Just never pressured the ball handler. Let ND turn the game into a boxing match where they could put it in the hands of one of two playmakers and score late in the shot clock every possession and actually win that way.
Brad's right about one thing. The team tried to shoot its way out of it. Frustration on one end led to 5/28 on the other. But why? Why let it happen?

Ah, who would you suggest that could have pressured Burton? We could not allow Burton to drive any more than they could allow PJ and Schief to get the ball down low. The game was lost because we did not get the ball down low despite double teams. PJ was 2-10 on 3 point shots and 6-9 inside the arc so why did we not get the ball to him. Same answer on their guards, Notre Dame was swarming the post players so we took 3 point shots and simply had a bad night.

Valleyboy thx for explaining a bit why we weren’t passing inside down low … it was so frustrating watching nothing happening in the paint! The amount of times I had to hold my breath and shut my eyes with the 3s 😖🤯

Its called letting the other team dictate what you do. That is the main reason we are so inconsistent. We do what other team wants us to do. So in turn if we happen to play above average at what we are not good at we win.

I see two wins in the ACC tournament and one in the Dance max with that kind of play/coaching.

We are top 25 in NET and will likely be a top 20 seed in the dance.

You don’t achieve that level of success by allowing other teams dictate the game.

ND agrees with you we went inside just enough in the second half. 10 3s for pj is that really what we wanna be doing?

Assuming you did not have an answer for pj taking 10 3s? Similar to our coach allowing him to do it.

He shouldn’t be shooting that many.
He has been making them at a pretty good clip lately because he has only been taking 4-5 per game in the last 5 games (except FSU where he didn’t take any and only played 16 minutes).
4-5 per game is probably what he should be taking. 10 is too many. Especially when he hits the first 2/3. The percentages always seem to catch up when he keeps shooting. He is definitely better at shooting the 3 early in games before he gets tired and loses his legs.

Because that's what Brownell wants, seemingly.
"What we've got here is... failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week - which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men.

That's exactly what he did over and over again. All we did playing way off of him was let him get a full head of steam with 10 seconds left on the shot clock before torching us. We had a bad night alright, and it started with complacency on defense and letting Notre Dame dictate the game to us.

If the opponent is doubling your players in the post, there are more options other that shooting 3 pointers.

Good point. Why let up at any point or any place after they cross half court? Watch Houston play. My goodness. They play like their hair is on fire on defense and double team the ball no matter where it is after it crosses mid court. They had 4 players out with injuries last night and at one point had no bigs on the court. They don't always win because they don't really have any scorers but my goodness do they play defense. BB should buy some tapes from Kelvin Sampson and study them. Do SOMETHING, for crying out loud Bradley!!

There is a trade off to pressuring so much on defense.

Players get tired faster. They commit more fouls. Offensive performance often suffers.
As I’m sure you noticed, we were down a starter last night and didn’t have a very deep bench. Our main guys had to play a lot of more than usual. Playing high pressure defense most of the game would’ve been a recipe for disaster.
As usual, many of you are allowing your disdain for Brownell to cloud your judgment. The game plan was correct. The execution was subpar. If we shoot anywhere close to our normal percentage from the outside win win easily.

We have enough depth at the guard position to at least apply enough pressure to prevent them from running as much clock as they did. Pressuring the ball coming up the court is just not part of our game. Hasn’t been all year.

This team hasn't shown that it us particularly adept defensively. I don't have confidence that they could pressure the opponent like you suggested.
The way you counter that is to make them pay for it to score and put them in a hole.

We never even had token pressure, where just standing within say 3-5 feet of the opponent changes what they do. Just letting them stand there unchallenged AT ALL was WHAT THEY WANTED, and Brownell was content to let them do EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED.
It would have been one thing to try to pressure them even a little and perhaps fail, but it's another thing altogether to simply allow the other team to play THEIR game exactly the way THEY want to play it.

If they're just going to stand there, then you can at least stand within 6 feet of them, to start a 5-second closely guarded count.

We just don’t pressure the ball coming up the court. Haven’t done it all year. You would think we might learn something given the number of east turnovers we give up when we get pressured a little bringing the ball across half court.
