When a coach who is historically the second worst coach in Clemson history (since Foster anyway) against ranked opponents, continues to struggle against ranked opponents with his best team ever, does it become logical to question the coach’s role in those struggles?

that our struggles aren’t just against ranked opponents. We also struggle against unranked opponents. It’s hard to nail down the common denominator, at least with our opponents.

That’s true. Since the data is so far inconclusive it’s reasonable that we keep him in place to continue and collect more data.

What is Brownell’s record vs ranked opponents? It can’t be good, but is it really worse than Cliff Ellis’ record (at Clemson)? Curious. Thanks in advance.

But you say “ranked opponents”, correct? This would mean all ranked opponents and records against. I show Brownell at 25%, 20 of 80 vs 20% you showed 5 years ago. Do you have the actual record at that time? I find it difficult to believe he would have improved 5% in 5 years, but I guess anything is possible. Thanks for the info, correct or not.

I posted this back in 2019 and it was AP Top 25 opponents in ACC play, pulled from Sports-Reference.com. At a glance, I see him as 6-8 in the 4 seasons or account for here. Not sure if I saved this spreadsheet to update everything.
My original post was as much about the deteriorating of the ACC as Brownell’s success against it. I counted 14 ranked games in those 4 seasons. That’s down to only 18% of his ACC schedule against ranked opponents. That’s fallen off the cliff. But his performance against them has improved and 2019-20 allowed him top 5 victories.

Thanks, you obviously put a lot of work into it and yes, the numbers at that point and since then certainly reflect a weaker ACC via ranking vs previous seasons of decades past. It is disappointing. I wonder what Brownell’s record has been since this analysis. Assuming it is better, or the angry mob would have posted it by now. I do appreciate the info, even if it is out of date now. I assume Neff is grading on the last five years and more importantly, this year.

We went 11-30 which is a 36.7 clip. We scored more points than any team so far this season when playing miami at home.
Did you watch the game? If you watched the game, and think our struggles were similar to the unc game, then you have some issues. This is what in talking about with our basketball "fanbase". Unbelievably delusional.

The legs are the most important part of shooting the basketball. When you are playing with tired legs, 3 point shots become more difficult and often come up short, or at least inconsistent. As good a job as UNC did against us defensively, I thinl we just didn't have our legs under us. Coach Brownell mentioned something about the short turnaround after the Miami game, and I think that is what came back to bite us.

Yeah ..... during the ACC tourney or any tournament when games are close together you at least hope you are playing a team that also has tired legs. That's why a bye is way more important than merely not having to play an extra game.

Getting smothered by their defense, and nobody wanting to pass the ball around to work their way into an open 3 point shot. I don't know their names, but if I did I would call them out, but we have a couple of players that will shoot the ball as soon as it touches their fingers with lots of time left on the shot clock...

Typically related to being overly excited for a big game. Home team misses the first few shots and the visitors start off hot. This causes the home team to press harder which only makes the problem worse. The movie “The Replacements”refer to it as quicksand. He harder you try the deeper you sink

The NC defense staying in Girard’s pocket all day doesn’t help either. They did a very good job of just not letting him get loose. We had one possession where he got 2 really good open looks and missed both but other than that they smothered him all day.

He was absolutely smothered all day, so on the rare occasion he actually had an open look, there was that much more pressure . . . plus he was probably worn down

Yep. When you’re being defended that way you run your tail off trying to get open. Very tiring and frustrating.

It's almost like the other coach teaches their players how to defend us...
but we can't do the same to the other team and are always surprised by what they do...

We scored 82 at Miami so the air flow wasn't the issue.

3's too. Looks like we were rattled in the second half and the more we tried and missed our confidence dropped. It kind of had the appearance that we gave up at the end of the game, but maybe wouldn't go as far as to say that.

Because they are too focused on getting the 3 pt shots off on every possession rather than going inside at least one of every three possessions! Even two if you are cold from the outside! Brownell has never learned this lesson!
