Channeling my best Paul Harvey voice....

Apr 20, 2015, 11:06 AM

And now...the rest of the story.....that you will never hear about again.

First, the Judge speaking to the prosecutor in the case. He is referring to a victims impact statement that was part of the record in this youtube video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIOh4QYmS2c

Here is the text of the various "victims impact statements" presented, one in particular which is cited by the judge in the video above.

VICTIM IMPACT STATEMENT

(Jordan Gray, mother)

Has the crime had a psychological impact on you?

My husband works nights and there are many nights I still can't sleep. Even with a security system I don't feel safe in my own home. I'm nervous about when random people walk down the street and constantly have our doors locked.

Has this crime effected the lifestyle of you or your family?

Due to the impact it has had on my 5-year-old daughter we have to consider the area in which we go. While my daughter and I used to play outside, we are hesitant to do so now by ourselves.

If you have any additional information, please feel free to attach it to this form. (i.e, recommended sentence).

This incident has had the most impact on my daughter. She is in constant fear of black men. When we are running errands, if we come across a black male, she holds me tight and begs me to leave. If (she) is playing in a room and I walk into another, she freaks out. It has affected her friendships at school and our relationship with African American friends.

(Tommy Gray, father)

Has the crime had a psychological impact on you?

For months after this crime I couldn't sleep. I would relive this incident every night before bed. I would constantly see their faces every time I closed my eyes.

Has this crime effected the lifestyle of you or your family?

Since the crime occurred my daughter is terrified of black males. Where ever we go, we are constantly reminded of her fears. She brings up the crime and can't be left alone in our own home because she is afraid someone will bust in the door."

Has this crime resulted in any damages or loss of property?

My wife's cell phone and vacation fund of about $1000.

If you have any additional information, please feel free to attach it to this form. (i.e, recommended sentence).

I don't have a recommended sentence but I feel like probation is not enough. This crime will effect my daughter for the rest of her life and Mr. Wallace deserves to serve time. If holding a little girl at gunpoint gets you probation, then our system is flawed.

But man, so does your presentation.

"... that you will never hear about again."

Except in an extremely long, thorough article in the nation's widest-circulated paper that is known for its brevity.

Oh, and the race baiting part. You get an A for research but an F for presentation.

with what he said, and that includes quite a few people defending what the judge did. In another article, the headline was about a "racist backlash" to what the judge said, which suggests that the people who have a problem with it are racist.

Personally, I don't think any of these silly things should get much attention, although a judge saying something like this probably deserves more than most. Clearly, white people have historically used racial ideology to oppress black people, so it's probably a bigger deal when white people use that racial ideology because of white people's position of power viz a viz that racial ideology. Here, though, we're talking about a black person in a position of authority, and I think that's what prompts people to wonder what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot.

What you hoped is that the people who lean left on this board would jump on the judge for the light sentence, and then you could turn around and say, "Ah ha! Gotcha! It's a black man slammin' some white folks! Now what, libs?!"

But that's not what happened.

Otherwise, why not just post the article from the get-go? I think any intelligent person can look at this story and realize this judge royally screwed up, race aside.

Apr 20, 2015, 2:09 PM

3 yrs old is old enough to remember things and will make her own decisions about who she is afraid of. If they were white...I feel very sure she should be afraid of white stranger men. The judge is acting like the kid is 1-2 yrs old. Infants from about 3-6 months can remember. They recognize their parents and people they are around a lot. And they have fear of strangers. If a friend of the parents wants to hold the baby, most will cling to the person they know well and cry. At three they can certainly recognize fear and what is going on. The men would probably screaming and shouting orders and presented the gun. Heck if that happened to me now I would probably have fears of like the child and parents have. I strongly believe the mother did not instill this in the child because she mentioned that they had black friends that they associated with. It all boils down to a dumb judge that made it all racial. Why can't the parents express the child's fears and say the child is scared of black men now?? There is no other way to describe it. Shame on the judge...it just shows his real feelings about racism.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wonder what he'd think about a black little girl...

Apr 20, 2015, 12:55 PM

feeling that white people were generally racist because she'd experienced violent racism at the hands of one white "individual." Or, I wonder if he'd say it was wrong to generalize about white racism based on experiencing racism coming from a few white "individuals." I'd say it's wrong to generalize in both cases, but it's hard to blame a little girl for having a visceral reaction.

This reminds me of the case of a writer who used to work the National Review a few years ago who ruined his career because of comments he made on the subject of generalization about race. He was already on a bit of thin ice because of his writing about statistics on race (like IQ and crime), and he often seemed a little too eager to chalk up racial inequality to genetics. But the piece that got him fired and basically pushed him into obscurity was a response to a piece by a black writer about having to "have the talk" with their child about expecting white racism. The gist was that they wanted their kid to be prepared for white people not to treat them equally, and the implication was that white people were generally racist. The response from the National Review writer (not in National Review, but a different blog) was to say that maybe white people needed to have "the talk" with their own kids about black people's disproportionate involvement in violent crimes.

Of course, as is often the case, the white writer's off-base response to the black writer's racial generalizations caused far more of a stir than the original piece. Maybe that's as it should be, given our country's racial history. But it obscured the fact that we tend to condone certain racial generalizations while condemning others as racist, and we often ignore the degree to which our biology may contribute to what can become racist generalization. It's hard to blame a kid, or even an adult, for thinking that certain groups of people are racist or certain groups of people are likely to be violent criminals, when they've experienced racism or violent crime from members of those groups. Unfortunately, all the abstract reason in the world that says that an individual member of a race can't really be representative of everyone of that race- or that there's no reason to believe skin color has anything to do with behavior- may not be enough to change the impression left by somebody's experience. So what might be needed is more socialization- experiences with people that suggest there's no reason to be afraid.

That's what the article was about, wasn't it?

Apr 20, 2015, 1:08 PM

Two black men broke into somebody's home and held a little girl at gun point, now the little girl is afraid of black men. It's imprinting, and since it's pre-rational (because it can happen without us thinking about it) it can contribute to irrational attitudes like racism, ie. being afraid of black men because some black men committed a crime against you.

Apr 20, 2015, 3:57 PM

And you've never been in one before. Does your heart start pounding? Do your adrenal glands secrete excess adrenaline? Do your blood vessels constrict? There are a lot of things our bodies, and minds, do without us knowing. Some people faint at the sight of blood. Put a newborn in water and he/she knows to hold their breath. How? They've never breathed before?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So let's say you're almost in a wreck

Apr 20, 2015, 4:59 PM

maybe we are confusing the word instinct

adrenaline rushes are a chemical response to fear. When you are born as a baby, you have no idea what is considered dangerous or should be fearful of without first having experience. there is nothing innate in us that makes people faint when they see blood, again, this is a response to learned experiences

baby's are a good example though, but Babies also spend several months in the womb with their lungs full of fluid, so it is not accurate to say they have never held their breath before. But holding your breath is not an instinct, it is an autonomic response, like blinking, swallowing, sneezing,, etc...
