Dabo “we are a gnats Hair away from being undefeated”

On WCCP just now.
I mean that’s just delusion isn’t it? We were actually lucky that the Pitt game was so close. We could’ve easily lost the Syracuse, BC and GT games as well.
He just went on a rant. He is very hurt by the criticism lately. It’s clear. I don’t know what to make of it. I’m not sure it’s a good thing.

We are 4 things from being undefeated right now.

1. An offensive line 2. A quarterback 3. An offensive coordinator 4. Making the portal a two way street instead of an Express lane to other teams.

There are those who would argue that we could have lost the Syracuse, BC and GT games, and while that's true, it can also be argued that we could have won against Georgia, NC State, and Pitt.

Agree, he's not wrong. I'd say more like 6-1 or 1-6. I only say that because too close to call what would have happened had we ever tied uga 10-10. Toss up imo and strawman argument.
But to me it's not record, it's why are the other games even close. Why can't we score more than 19.

when faced with challenging circumstances, it's Dabo's job to keep the team motivated, encouraged and working hard, so he's not going to be overly-critical or throw anyone under the bus. First of all, that's not his nature. Second, he has to make them believe things are going to get better because if he doesn't, he'll lose the team. So...regardless of what he may really be thinking, all you're going to hear from him are the things that keep this team and this staff encouraged and motivated to keep working hard to get better.

I think the point OP is making is its pathetic to say "We could be..." because that can go both ways. But we could not have beaten UGA.

Hey Narduzzi! Glad you could stop by.
With a little effort on a bad throw and a simple catch, Clemson would have been winning 17-0 in the first quarter. Clemson also handed Pitt the ball on a shovel pass and asked them to take the 7 points.
Somehow you and Narduzzi show up with "Clemson was lucky the score wasn't worse".
Maybe you should take from it that Dabo has been telling people the whole time that he was winning that "the difference between winning and losing can be very small" and everybody wanted to laugh at him and say that line wasn't working for Clemson anymore.
Now all of those people laughing at Dabo are finding out the hard way that it was true, but they are forgetting that it works both ways.
The differences in this team being 1 loss or even undefeated is not nearly as enormous as many would like to believe. The same can be said for how far away this team is from being 1-6.
It's people like you that are only willing to see it in 1 direction that complicate what Dabo is saying.
Winning is hard and losing is easy, but there isn't always a huge difference in how to get to very different outcomes.

Cancelling out half the games big plays to maybe find a path to victory

Does not count as “almost winning”. We were down 27-10 in the fourth quarter.
Legit “almost winning” or “gnats hair” losses are like losing on literally one at the end of the game. Certainly not the case with Pitt.

Does it matter where in the game the 2 or 3 plays happen if they are big enough to be the difference in potentially being up by 17 instead of down by 17?
I would say the plays happening earlier is more important and not less important to how the rest of the game went because there is so much left that would have changed.
Catch by Shipley and no INT in the red zone likely spells a 17-0 1st quarter lead for Clemson.
That's two very routine plays that would have made a huge difference in the outcome.

+1 I would say that's a big definite yes that it matters. How many times have we heard Dabo and other coaches talk about confidence. We're up 17-0 in 1st quarter, then Pitt is probably pressing a bit more. CBV can feel a little more comfortable pinning them ears back and who knows, press Pitt into forcing plays. Definitely puts all the mo on our side and all the pressure on their side.
Same can be said for the NC State game. We make a couple plays, forces them to adjust defensively etc. So yes, imo it does change and that's why I agree with what Dabo was saying.

We all go through trials in our lives...and he's in one now. He's probably better off not saying as much overall right now. He hasn't had to deal with this situation in quite a while so its understandable. Dabo has also said its "1000% on me"....I would just stick to that...thats what SOS did at UF when expectations weren't met. Short & Sweet...take all the blame.
This isn't to pile on, but even IF we were undefeated, we would still have the same underlying roster management issues that have played a big role into where we are today. Hopefully this off-season will serve to be a catalyst to modernize/update (notice I didn't saw change completely) some outdated recruiting philosophies. Gotta have better quality depth across-the-board (like our peers) if we are truly trying to compete for NCs...

You sound like Coach Narduzzi. When were they going to score all the extra points that would have made for the larger margin you and he seem to be missing? They knocked themselves out of points with penalties and if you really look at the tape, you might see that Pitt was holding in plain sight on most their pass plays. Lots of holding goes uncalled but for Pitt it is almost beyond belief. We had rushers hurled to the ground and the TV announcers made mention of it once. We will see about Narduzzi's '"Karma's tough"' comment in a future match up with the Panthers. I suspect he might regret saying that 'bit' when he next sees Dabo on the opposite sideline. Conversely--your comments about us being a 'knat's hair' away from losing to BC & GT is right on.

^^^Yep..holding was awful in that game.
Narduzzi showed a lack of maturity/class..that happens when you aren't used to winning. I know for a fact Dabo has been BEYOND gracious to him in the past.

I agree about Narduzzi. But I hear week in-week out how every team is holding us, no matter what conference the refs are from. If it literally never gets called, maybe y'all just misunderstand what holding is in today's game, and we should do more of that?

Yea. It did look like Pitt’s strategy was to hold on every offensive play and also DBs hold on every pass play. The thinking must be “they can’t or won’t call it every play”. And it worked.

Clemson is beating Clemson. It’s just injuries, a bad, undeveloped OL, Covid testing, bad play calling, WRs dropping balls, a QB who can’t get out of his own head, and stupid penalties because of lack of discipline. So, yeah, fix all those issues, and this team could very well be undefeated, Coach.
I was listening too. Qualk, Kelly, and Vanderhort, or whatever his name is, are in serious ### kissing mode right now with Dabo being there. “Oh it’s not us saying those bad things about Clemson. That’s the national media!” Geez. Scared they gonna get cut off.

He's elevated Clemson to a higher standard

We're in a different place now than we were in 2010. Things are going very badly this season and criticism is going to come. It's the same way at every top program. Ohio State lost one game to Oregon this year and buck nut fans were clamoring for the entire defensive staff to be fired immediately. This is the world now with message boards and social media. Criticism is more prevalent than ever and I just don't feel Dabo is handling this well. He's been very defensive and keeps doubling down that he's not going to change anything and gets angry anytime someone suggests adjustments or changes.
Hopefully HE can tune out the noise and focus on saving what's left of this season.

Very good perspective flyslyw. I agree 100%. It wouldn't really matter if we were 6-1. 1-6 or undefeated. For whatever reasons exist we are just bad this year. Certainly wouldn't beat anyone at the end of the season playing like this. I think the true picture will be clear when we see what the coach does after the season is over. We will know his level of stubborn then.

In a literal sense, yes we are about 6 plays away from being undefeated, but we are about 120 points away from being dominant. Dabo's defensiveness and arrogant attitude has made me concerned more than the losses by 6 plays.
